Ph.D. student in bone tissue engineering

Task
Thegroup of prof. Clemens van Blitterswijk at the Institute for BiomedicalTechnology is dedicated to develop new strategies for the treatment ofbone and cartilage defects. In bone tissue egineering, we use acombination of calcium phosphate ceramics and human mesenchymal stemcells derived from bone marrow. Elderly patients comprise the largestbut also most challenging target of bone tissue engineering becausehMSCs display an age-dependent decline in stem cell potential. Tworeasons are hypothesised to underly this phenomenon: i. perturbedmaintenance of genomic integrity, leading to a progressivedeterioration of cellular physiology; ii. acquired dysfunctioning ofspecific signal transduction pathways. This project aims to test bothhypothesis and use the knowledge to improve the performance of currenttissue engineering protocols.

Profile
We are looking for a PhD student with a biomedical background who is keen to apply molecular biology to solve a medical problem.

Weoffer you a PhD position for a period of 4 years in ourinternationally-oriented and enthousiastic research-group. Yourstarting salary will be € 1867,- in the first year and up to € 2394,-gross per month in the last year.
