PhD Student Collaborative Computer-Aided Design

At Delft University of Technology, Faculty of Electrical Engineering,Mathematics, and Computer Science (EEMCS), we have a PhD position in anew TNO-funded project "An Integrated Collaborative Design Frameworkfor Application in Ship Design". This is a joint project of theComputer Graphics and CAD/CAM group and TNO Defence, Security andSafety.

We therefore invite applications for a PhD student in

 COLLABORATIVE COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN

for the development of a framework for collaborative design.

DESCRIPTION OF THE RESEARCH
For the design of very complex products, such as naval ships, manyrequirements must be met, and these requirements are ofteninterdependent and possibly conflicting. In addition to operationalperformance aspects, also other life cycle aspects must be considered, and this must already be done in the early design phases to save costs. This requires collaboration of several design disciplines, in anintegrated way.
The goal of the research project is to develop a generic framework forintegrated collaborative design processes. Attention will be paid to,in particular, the representation of different design requirements, aproduct model that incorporates all relevant information for thedifferent disciplines, and mechanisms for considering designalternatives. The framework will be applied in simulation-based designfor naval ships.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• University degree (MSc or equivalent) with excellent results incomputer science, or in another scientific/engineering field relevantto this research
• Good background in the following topics: computer-aided design, (collaborative) product modelling, constraint solving
• Demonstrable interest and skills in research
• Good personal communication skills, and good ability to work in a team
• Proficiency in English, both spoken and written.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS
The PhD student must be prepared to undergo security screening.
During the employment, the PhD student has to fulfil the courserequirements of the Graduate School ASCI (Advanced School for Computingand Imaging). Some instructional duties will also be a part of the work.
Enrolment and salary are according to the Employment Agreement Dutch Universities.
Enrolment will start as soon as possible. The PhD student willinitially be appointed for a period of one year, after which anevaluation will take place. If the evaluation indicates enoughpotential for finishing the graduation within four years, theappointment will be renewed for a period of three years. The salarywill be € 2074,- per month in the first year (before taxes), increasingto € 2394,- in the fourth year.
