At the Department of Computer and Information Science, Faculty ofInformation Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering, theNorwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) there is PhDscholarship offered within the field of Information Systems, with aspecific focus on IT and Knowledge Management. The PhD scholarship is associated with the AKSIO (Active KnowledgeSystem for Integrated Operations) project financed by the NorwegianResearch Council (PETROMAKS, pr.nr. 163365/S30). Participants in AKSIOinclude Computas AS, Statoil ASA, Hydro ASA, Institutt forEnergiteknologi (IFE), the Norwegian University of Science andTechnology (NTNU) and Universitetsstudiene på Kjeller (UNIK). The primary research focus of the AKSIO project is development and useof ICT-solutions in Integrated Operations (IO) in oil and gasproduction. More accurately, the project focuses on establishing newapproaches and collaborative technologies for improving the transfer ofknowledge across geographical and organizational borders. The projectuses field studies and other empirical methods in order to investigateand evaluate new prototypes and associated work practices. As thisrequires both organizational and technological competence, the projectalso has a multidisciplinary edge. |
Requirements
Research Assistants/PhD grants:MSc/MEng (or equivalent) in Computer or Information Science,or in Computer Engineering, with a GPA equivalent to ECTS "B" orbetter.Post docs:PhD (or equivalent) within a relevant field (i.e. Computer or Information Science, or Computer Engineering).

The position is remunerated according to salary levels 40-61 in thenational salary scheme, gross NOK 296.800-429.000 per annum, of which2% is deducted for the State Pension scheme. The salary will be decidedafter discussion with the employer. |
For approximate conversion from NOK to USD and/or EUR, divide the amount by 8.
Living costs in Norway
Although the Norwegian tax system is rather complicated, a goodrule of thumb is that one pays appr. 35% tax on net income upto NOK 300.000. The next NOK 100.000 has an additional 10% tax, and onnet income in excess of NOK 500.000 is taxed 50%. Net incomeis equal to gross income, minus interest on loans, and also minus abasic "free amount" which all citicens are alowed to earn withoutpaying tax (currently appr. NOK 35.000 per year).
The Norwegian public health care system is well developed, and freefor all (of course due to the relatively high tax level). Hence, theregenerally is no need for private health care insurances. Education onall levels (including university level) is also free for all.
Daily expences and housing is generally expensive in Norway. For aplace to live, one will generally pay between NOK 4000 (for a simpleone bed studio with kichenette, possibly shared bathroom)and 8000 (fora 3-4 piece appartment suitable for a small family) permonth. Other approximate costs:
- Milk: NOK 10 per litre
- Bread: NOK 15 a loaf
- Beer (35 cl): NOK 15
- Wine (70 cl): NOK 100
- Gasoline: NOK 10 per litre
- Bus card: NOK 700 per month
- Draft beer in a pub: NOK 50 per 0,5 litre
- Dinner (3 courses w/wine) at restaurant: NOK 500-1000
