PhD Programme, International Studies, University of Trento 2005
The University of Trento, one of Italy's most highly ranked publicuniversities in the social sciences,* is inviting applications for itsthree-year doctoral programme in International Studies. The programmewill be centred on the study of International Law, InternationalEconomics and International Politics. The programme is composed of 150hours of structured coursework, a period of study outside Italy, and adissertation under the supervision of faculty members and an externalreader nominated by the School.
All coursework will be in English and will be taught by members of theuniversity's multi-national faculty. First-year students, in additionto fulfilling requirements in methodology and international history,will take advanced seminars in two of the three component disciplinesof the School, before specializing in a single discipline from YearTwo. The programme, which has received start-up funding from the Italian andGerman governments, is offering eight full scholarships renewable forthree years subject to satisfactory academic appraisal. An equal numberof non-scholarship places is also available without fees, for studentswith competitive personal dossiers. In addition two scholarships,jointly funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and theAutonomous Province of Trento are available for candidates withAfghani, Egyptian, Iraqi or Israeli nationality All students will beeligible to apply for funding from the School to pursue research abroadand will be equally eligible to apply for the University of Trento'sfellowship programmes with partner universities in the United Statesand elsewhere. The University provides subsidized housing and Italianlanguage courses to non-native speakers of Italian.
Candidates are invited to send their applications to the School by March 21 2005.The selection process, which will normally include an interview inTrento, will take place during the second half of April and successfulcandidates will be notified in short order. All applicants must possessa graduate degree in a relevant academic discipline by September 2005.An orientation week will be held in September 2005. Successfulapplicants are encouraged to take residence in Trento in that periodand to familiarize themselves with the town and the university.Coursework will begin in late September 2005.
