PhD position on the signatures of the merging history of galaxies (1,0 fte)
(Groningen), 40 uur per week
University of Groningen
Job description
Job title: PhD position on the signatures of the merging history ofgalaxies Current galaxy formation theories postulate that galaxies formthrough the mergers of smaller systems. Such merger events leaveimprints in the spatial and kinematic distribution of the stars(streams, tidal tails). The goals of this project are i) tocharacterize these imprints and their evolution in phase-space from adynamical point of view; ii) to develop techniques to recover thesesignatures from observations; and iii) to apply such techniques toongoing surveys with the aim of reconstructing the formation history ofthe Milky Way galaxy. This project is set out from a theoreticalperspective that combines both analytic methods and numericalsimulations. The very large surveys of the Galaxy (SDSS and RAVE) thatare coming online, and those planned for the near future (Gaia), willprovide an unprecedented and extremely detailed map of our Galaxy, thatwill enhance the scientific return and timeliness of this PhD project.
