The economics of the cultural industries: competition, innovation and entrepreneurship

The field of the thesis will be the economic aspects of the dynamicsof the cultural industries (ranging from painting and literature tomusic, movies, television and computer games). Attention will be givento competitive processes at industry level as well as to the managerialand entrepreneurial decision-making of the firms and individualsconcerned. The project is expected to be usefully linked to ongoingresearch projects related to the economics and strategic management ofcultural innovations, ranging from the creation of new genres or stylesto the re-creation of traditional art forms. Both quantitative andqualitative approaches will be used to understand as completely aspossible the specifics of the industries and organizations that will bestudied. The detailed outline of the research project will be decidedupon by the researcher and his or her supervisor, taking the particularinterests of the former into full account.

The student will be supervised by Professor Nachoem Wijnberg,currently at the University of Groningen. Requirements
Applicantsmust have an MSc, preferably in Business Economics or ManagementScience, as well as demonstrable research abilities/experience. Inaddition to a robust academic motivation, they should preferably have astrong interest in or knowledge of at least some of the culturalindustries. Knowledge of statistics and quantitative methodologies isimportant. Applicants are also expected to have excellent speaking andwriting skills in English.

Appointment
ThePhD student will be appointed in the Department of BusinessStudies/Amsterdam graduate School of Business, within the Faculty ofEconomics and Econometrics. The starting date is 1 September 2005.
Theposition will be initially for sixteen months, to be extended to amaximum of four years (in total). The gross monthly salary will be €1,813 in the first year, increasing to € 2,283 in the fourth year. Ontop of this, there will be an 8% holiday allowance.
Apart fromworking on the thesis, the researcher will also spend a limited amountof time on teaching, preferably related to her/his own research, withinthe AgBS/FEE.
The Econometrics Department has a lively,research-oriented collegial atmosphere. The University is located inthe centre of Amsterdam.
