PhD position (Computer scientist, Mathematician, Physicist) - Universiteit van Amsterdam

The Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) is one of the leading institutionsfor higher education in Europe. It participates in the internationalscience network, collaborating with major universities throughout theworld. The faculty has four departments, with about 1,500 employeesincluding researchers and lecturers, 150 full-time and part-timeprofessors operating in eleven research institutes. Each institute hasits own research program that is financed by the faculty, the nationalresearch council NWO, the government, EU departments and privateenterprises.

Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics

The Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED)(comprising 17 chairs) concentrates on the interactions between livingorganisms and their physical and chemical environment. As part of IBEDthe interdisciplinary chair of Computational Bio- and PhysicalGeography (CBPG) deals with the computational issues that arise in thiscontext. CBPG presently participates in a large national BSIK project,Virtual Laboratory for e-Science (VL-e). It is in the framework of thisproject that CBPG has a PhD position. The position is a regular Dutch(promovendus) place, with a duration of 4 years (full-time).

PhD position (Computer scientist, Mathematician, Physicist)

Full-time
Vacancy number 04-1062
Job profile
Thechair of CBPG focuses on the design and evaluation of new computationalmethods to relate model results with observations in the fields ofbio-geography and physical geography. Analytical tools (like newdata-mining techniques and geographical information systems) anddata-intensive observation techniques (like satellite remote sensingand ground-based radar observations) play a central role in this work.Within the VLE-project, and in co-operation with the Institute forInformatics, SARA and the Royal Netherlands Air Force, CBPG aims atdeveloping interactive algorithms for combined state and parameterestimation in dynamic and spatially distributed systems.
The PhD extends existing and develops new methods for combined stateand parameter estimation based on inverse modeling anddata-assimilation, and applies these to a laboratory-scale hydrologicsystem and a large scale system of bird migration. Both are systems forwhich appropriate dynamic models and a large amount of observations arealready available. The developed generic methodologies will beimplemented on clusters for parallel computing and on the world wideGRID.

Requirements
Weare looking for a candidate that has shown a genuine commitment doscientific research, and has a strong background in mathematics, physics or informatics. The candidate should be enthusiastic aboutapplied research in the natural sciences. While we naturally expectthat the candidate will be able to develop own research the candidateshould be geared towards cooperation with other scientists within CBPGand the Institute for Informatics.

The successful candidate has:
• MSc (or Dutch "doctoraal") in a relevant field (e.g. mathematics, systems and control, informatics etc.)
• proven communication skills, and willing to co-operate in an interdisciplinary team
• proven skills in scientific writing (as appears e.g. from an MSc thesis)
• well developed skills over one or more computer languages
• ideally, experience with dynamic models, statistics, parallel and grid-computing
