Department of Physiological Sciences, University of Advanced Studies(Sokendai) is operated by The National Institute for PhysiologicalSciences (NIPS) at Okazaki (http://www.nips.ac.jp/eng/).NIPS consists of nineteen divisions dedicated to the study of thephysiological function of living organisms including human. Researchareas cover various physiological sciences including morphology,biochemistry, pharmacology, molecular and cellular biology, andinformation science. Research activities are extensive andcomprehensive, including molecular structure of ion channels,intracellular dynamics of ions, mechanism of secretion and cell volumeregulation, development and differentiation of neuronal cells,mechanism of synaptic transmission and neural network formation, andhigher brain functions such as processing of sensory information, motorcontrol, learning, and cognition. To perform the mission of theinstitute as a cooperative center of universities and researchinstitutes in and out of this country, we accept many visitingscientists from all around the world for active collaboration projects.
Candidates for this PhD Course Scholarship may come from any countryin the world except Japan. At least one is awarded every year for3-year PhD program starting in October. Awardee of the PhD Scholarshipwill receive full support for:
- Application fee (30,000 yen)
- Admission fee (282,000 yen)
- Annual Tuition (520,800 yen)
- Economy class flight tickets for coming to Okazaki from home country and leaving for home country
- Monthly stipend (175,000 yen)
In general, candidates must have completed, or expected to obtainbefore starting study in NIPS, master's degree, or equivalent, from arecognised university. This Scholarship is not for persons who alreadyhave PhD degree. Candidates must be well-prepared for the course forwhich they are applying to Department of Physiological Sciences.

Securing supervision:
It is essential to secure appropriate supervision before applyingfor this scholarship. You should get in touch with at least one of theprofessors in NIPS (http://www.nips.ac.jp/eng/outline/pub/staff.html)to find out about any technical requirements or range and depth ofbackground knowledge that is needed by successful candidates foradmission. The Board of Graduate Studies at NIPS takes advice fromprofessors responsible for determining admission to the Universityabout the respective merits of the applicants. On the basis of thatadvice, applicants shortlisted for the PhD Scholarship will be invitedto an interview at NIPS in February every year for the PhD programstarting in October of the same year.
Candidates who are not native speakers of English are required bythe Board of Graduate Studies to provide the results of an Englishlanguage test and expected to meet the following standard ofproficiency:
TOEFL test (paper-based):minimum score 600, with a minimum score of 5.0in the TOEFL Test of Written English (TWE), orTOEFL test(computer-based):minimum score 250 overall, with a minimum score of 5.0in the essay writing section of the test.
Eligible candidates will be sent application forms by the Board ofGraduate Studies when they become available. They must be completed andreturned to the Board by 1 February 2005.
This Scholarship cannot be held in conjunction with other awards or scholarships.
