Preface
Dear reader and prospective applicant
This Norad Fellowship Course Catalogue presents the opportunitiesoffered by Norwegian universities and university colleges for Master'sdegree courses financed by The Norwegian Agency for DevelopmentCooperation (Norad). The Norwegian Centre for International Cooperationin Higher Education (SIU) is responsible for administering the NoradFellowship Programme. SIU is a public administrative body under theMinistry of Education and Research.
The Norad Fellowship Programme is based on a vision that goodeducational opportunities at universities and university colleges inNorway contribute to increased competence in developing countries.Norwegian strategies for development cooperation are emphasising theimportance of education in the fight against poverty and as aprerequisite for growth. Strengthening higher education and researchlend support to developing countries' knowledge base and competencebuilding. Support for higher education is also essential for capacitybuilding in the public administration, and in areas such as health andeducation.
Most of the courses in the Norad Fellowship Programme are held inNorway, and are offered in fields where Norwegian institutions have aninternational standing. The courses offer you the benefit of a highacademic quality education in a culturally mixed environment. Thedegree courses are designed for an international market and should berelevant for the fellows' home professions. The courses demanding athesis give the fellows the opportunity to choose a theme relevant tohis/her home professions and carry out research in their own country.
In total, approximately 90 Norad fellows may be enrolled annually. Thenumber of received applications last year exceeded 2200. The sevenNorwegian universities and university colleges offering courses in theNorad Fellowship Programme in 2006 are: Bodø University College (HiBo),Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB), Norwegian University ofScience and Technology (NTNU), University of Bergen (UiB), Universityof Oslo (UiO), University of Stavanger (UiS) and University of Tromsø(UiTø).
In addition, the fellowship programme this year includes two coursesheld at universities outside Norway: one course in cooperation betweenthe University of Malawi, Malawi and the University of Dar es Salaam,Tanzania where the course is given and one at the University of WesternCape, South Africa.
