Job description
Within the Physical Chemistry department of the IMM there are various openings for graduate students to develop the solid-state NMR techniques of tomorrow and apply them to materials science studies of relevant functional materials and biomimicking materials. One Ph.D. project will be dedicated toward the study of complex MH alanates for Hydrogen storage concentrating on order/disorder in the materials in relation to efficient hydrogen kinetics during loading and unloading. A novel planar NMR probe configuration is proposed to study thin film metal hydrides prepared through modern deposition techniques with controlled doping profiles and special cap layers for both oxidization protection and catalytic hydrogen adsorption. Two Ph.D. projects will be dedicated to the study of functional proteins building on the characteristic sequences found in fibrous silk proteins and synthetic polyisocyanopeptides. developed in the synthetic IMM groups. These synthetic counterparts of ß-helical structures are reminiscent to those found in nature, related to amyloid proteins causing a host of diseases (e.g. Alzheimers) Two Ph.D. projects will be dedicated toward NMR technical developments focused on the implementation of microcoil NMR to support the above-mentioned projects. One project will capitalize on microMAS designs to develop NMR experiments that take advantage of the specific benefits of the microcoils and work on techniques to study specifically aligned materials. The second project concentrates on integrating microcoils with microfluidic chips The ultimate aim is to come to a table-top spectrometer for chemical analysis on a Chip.

Requirements
Required education/skills: DoctorateWe are looking for an enthusiastic researcher with a Master’s degree in physics or physical chemistry, and with adequate theoretical and experimental skills. We prefer candidates with a good team spirit, who like to work in an internationally oriented environment and are able to collaborate with our partner groups on the crossroads between chemistry and (technical) physics.

Organization
Radboud University Nijmegen Faculteit der Natuurwetenschappen, Wiskunde en InformaticaStrategically located in Europe, Radboud University Nijmegen is one of the leading academic communities in the Netherlands. A place with a personal touch, where top-flight education and research take place on a beautiful green campus in modern buildings with state-of-art facilities.

The Faculty of Science at Radboud University Nijmegen teaches and carries out research in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Computational Science and Environmental Science. This research and teaching is organized in a number of research and educational institutes. The aim of Institute for Molecules and Materials is to conduct research and train undergraduate and graduate students in the field of functional- molecular structures and materials. There is an emphasis on understanding and controlling complexity in order to be able to design new functionality in these systems. This research area can be divided into two main themes: bio-inspired systems and nano/mesoscopic structures. Covering both experimental and theoretical physics and chemistry, and harboring skills in state-of-the-art analytical and synthetic techniques, the groups that constitute the IMM possess expertise in all areas needed to explore these fields. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) research plays an important role in the research of the IMM. The IMM has excellent solid-state NMR facilities, based at the Physical Chemistry department, including Chemagnetics CMX Infinity 300, 400 and 600 MHz spectrometers a homebuilt 180 MHz spectrometer and access to a Varian Inova 800 spectrometer with solids capabilities (www.ru.nl/physchem). Finally, a collaboration with the Nijmegen high magnet field laboratory exists. In the new HFML a 33 T Bitter magnet will be optimized for magnetic resonance experiments.
