The main task is research in a new project "Integration of Design andAnalysis Models" that is supported by NWO (the Netherlands Organisationfor Scientific Research).

Computer-aided design involves several phases, including design andanalysis. The design model is a feature model in this project. Forfinite element analysis, the design model has to be converted into ananalysis model, which consists of a mesh with a large number of simplethree-, two- or one-dimensional (3D, 2D or 1D) elements, e.g.tetrahedrons, triangles or line segments. The goal of this project isto develop efficient meshing methods and implement these.

For cases in which a full 3D model has to be analysed, an efficientmethod will be developed to only locally update a 3D mesh where thedesign model has actually been modified, instead of regenerating thecomplete mesh. For cases in which it is unfeasible to analyse a full 3Dmodel, efficient methods will be developed to generate meshes foridealised (2D or 1D) models, and to associate such idealised models tothe design model for automatic propagation of changes in an analysismodel to the design model.
During the employment, the PhD student has to fulfil the courserequirements of the Graduate School ASCI (Advanced School for Computingand Imaging). Some instructional duties will also be a part of the work.

Requirements
Opleidingsniveau / vaardigheden: WO
University degree (MSc or equivalent) with excellent results incomputer science, or possibly in another scientific/engineering fieldrelevant to this research.
Good background in the following topics: computer science, computer-aided design, algorithm development.
Demonstrable interest and skills in research.
Good personal communication skills, and good ability to work in a team.
Proficiency in English, both spoken and written.
