MSc in Applied Numerical Computing, Univ. of Manchester
MSc in Applied Numerical Computing
Mathematics and computers are keys to solving problems and analyzingdata in areas as diverse as biology (genomic research, medicalimaging), finance (globalization of markets, sophisticated optionstrading), engineering (computational mechanics), and digital libraries(indexing and searching vast corpuses of data). In these and manyother areas of industry and commerce, there is a pressing need forpeople with numerical computing skills.
Our MSc programme
The School runs an MSc in AppliedNumerical Computing. The programme develops the mathematical andcomputer skills necessary to find numerical solutions of sophisticatedmathematical models with a computer. A number of modules on the courseare taught by the Supercomputing, Visualization ande-Science group within Manchester Computing.
This MSc course is suitable for mathematically well qualifiedgraduates. Most of our students have a undergraduate degree inMathematics, though some come from physics and engineering backgroundsand others join after working in industry for a time. No knowledge of computing is assumed.
Theprogramme starts in September and lasts one year. It compriseslectures and coursework, with exams in January and April, followed bya dissertation carried out and written up between April andSeptember. The choice of topic is broad and will be supervised by amember of staff in Mathematics or Computing, possible with an industrial partner; follow the link for a list of recent dissertation topics.
Diploma and Related Programmes
Also offered is an 9-month diplomaprogramme in Applied Numerical Computing, which is similar to the MSc,but involves a smaller dissertation.
The School of Computer Science offers an MSc programme in Computational Science and Engineering, covering the computational aspects of large-scale simulation. Consult the Computer Science website for further details.
