Korea: Postgraduate Opportunities at Information and Communications University


Since the mid 1990s, there has been an increasing demand for high-qualityhuman resources with ability of leading technological innovations anddevelopments in the field of IT. To respond to such needs, the KoreanMinistry of Information and Communication (MIC) and Korea’s IT-relatedresearch institutes and IT industrial bodies jointly founded ICU. ICU(Information and Communications University) was founded in 1997 andcontinues to be supported by the Korean Ministry of Information andCommunication and IT industry. There are two schools of engineering andIT-business, both of which focus on IT, and the areas of research and studyinclude wireless communication, ubiquitous computing, bioinformatics,software engineering, and IT-management among others.

The amount of research funds per faculty member is the highest in Koreanuniversities. ICU undergraduate students are selected from the top 1% ofKorean SAT examinees and 60% of the students are from Korea’s specializedhigh schools such as Science High School. 15% of ICU graduate studentpopulation is foreign nationals, contributing a great deal to the growth ofICU in its academic and research capacity. In addition, all the majorcourses are taught in English, a rare trait among Korean universities.Furthermore, ICU has superior, state-of-the-art research, teaching, andresidential facilities, built in 2003. Located in Daedeok Science Town(DASTO), Korea’s center for research and development activities, ICU is alsowell-situated to establish cooperative relations with outstanding researchand academic institutions.

The ultimate goal of ICU’s School of Engineering is to produce globaltechnical leaders who are equipped with superior management capabilities aswell as comprehensive technological skills in the field of IT. To achievethis goal, the School of Engineering focuses on developing students’ globalleadership in the IT industry, government, and academia. The School of IT-Business offers intensive programs with a goal to cultivateleaders in the IT business world. The School aims at seeking powerful andeffective answers to management problems related to IT business sectors. Theprograms focus on providing interdisciplinary education in order to fosterIT leaders with knowledge in engineering, and offers fundamental coursesfromdifferent academic areas including business, economics, industrialengineering, information sociology, and engineering. Currently ICU admits international students at the graduate level only whiletransfer students are allowed in the undergraduate programs as well. Thegraduate programs consist of engineering and business areas, both of whichfocus on IT. ICU boasts of excellent faculty with extensive industrial andresearch experiences, highly-challenging academic programs, superiorresearch centers, state-of-the-art facilities, 100% employment rate, andfinancial support for all international students. The types of financialsupport available for international students are Samsung ElectronicsScholarship, Korean government scholarships, and research assistantships.

Graduate applicants are required to submit a study plan, copies of diplomas,official transcripts, and two letters of recommendation amongothers. Non-native English speakers must show a proof of Englishproficiency by submitting a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (CBT 213) or IELTSscore of 6.0, for English is the main instructional language at ICU. ICU’sinstitutional code of TOEFL/GRE/GMAT is 4558. The application deadlines areOctober 31 for the spring term (starting around February) and April 30 forthe fall term (starting around August).
