1. INTRODUCTION
The Graduate School of Energy Science, Kyoto University, is offering the International Doctoral Program in Energy Science.
The primary objective of the International Doctoral Program in EnergyScience, Kyoto University, is to provide young students and researchersholding a Masters degree (or equivalent) with an opportunity to furthertheir studies toward a doctoral degree at Kyoto University.
In this Doctoral Program, the Japanese language is not required as thenecessary four units can be obtained by choosing from the variety ofcourses presented in English, so a good command of English is required.

1.1 Scholarship
Students admitted to the program will be financially supported forthree years through the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho)Scholarship.

1.2 Fundamental Eligibility
One who applies to join the International Doctoral Program in EnergyScience, Kyoto University, must satisfy all of the following conditions:
(1) He/she is an eligible applicant for the Japanese Government(Monbukagakusho) Scholarship obtainable through the recommendation of aJapanese university.
(2) He/she is eligible to apply to join the Doctor Course of the Graduate School of Energy Science, Kyoto University.
(3) He/she is a graduate of a university with which the Graduate Schoolof Energy Science, Kyoto University, has signed an Agreement ofInternational Academic Exchange. (Other agreements of equivalentstanding are acceptable in place of the above agreement.)
(4) He/she is not the holder of any doctoral level degree in principle.
(5) No one can apply for the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship through more than one university.

2.COURSES AND NUMBER TO BE ADMITTED
2.1 Courses
The following departments are included in the Graduate School of EnergyScience, Kyoto University. Each applicant must choose one of them ashis/her major before application.

·Fundamental Energy Science
·Energy Conversion Science
·Energy Science and Technology

2.2 Number of applicants to be admitted
Eight applicants will be admitted.

3. ELIGIBILITY DETAILS
3.1 Nationality
Applicants must be from one of the countries with which Japan hasofficial diplomatic relations. If the applicant has already studied ata Japanese university as a recipient of the Japanese Government(Monbukagakusho) Scholarship, three years must have passed since he/sheleft Japan.  Students who are currently studying in Japan cannotapply to join this Program.

3.2 Age
Each applicant must be under 35 years of age as of April 1, 2006.
3.3 Academic qualifications
Each applicant must satisfy one of the following conditions by the endof September, 2006, otherwise the admission and scholarship will becancelled.
(1) He/she is the holder of a masters level degree.
(2) He/she has been engaged in research for more than 2 years atuniversities or research institutes after graduation from a universityor after completion of a 16-year school education, and is approved tobe eligible by the Graduate School of Energy Science, Kyoto University.
(3) He/she is 24 years of age or over and is approved to have anacademic ability higher than or equivalent to a Masters degree by theGraduate School of Energy Science, Kyoto University.

3.4 Physical and mental health
Each applicant must be physically and mentally healthy enough to carry out his/her studies at Kyoto University.

3.5 Language ability
Each applicant must have a good command of English.

3.6 Other conditions
(1) Each admitted student must arrive in Japan between October 1 and October 7, 2006.
(2) Applicants who are currently active soldiers will not be accepted.
(3) For a student couple, the Japanese Government can only offer a scholarship to one party.
(4) Any applicant, who is to receive a scholarship from his/hergovernment or from any other foundation, will not be accepted as arecipient of the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship

4. SCHOLARSHIP AND OTHER FINANCIAL SUPPORTS
The following will be offered to successful applicants.
(1) Stipend:
Continuing for a period of at most 36 months. The value for 2005 was 175,000 yen per month.

(2) Travel to and from Japan:
An economy class round trip airfare is offered between theinternational airport closest to the successful applicant's homeaddress, and Kansai International Airport.  However, a return airticket will only be offered if he/she leaves Japan immediately afterthe scholarship ends.

(3) School fees:
Successful applicants will be granted exemptions from entrance and tuition fees.

(4) Others:
Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) will partially reimbursemedical expenses.  JASSO also provides successful applicants withan arrival allowance (25,000yen) upon arrival in Japan.

5. SELECTION AND ADMISSION
5.1 1st stage selection
The Graduate School of Energy Science, Kyoto University, examines thedocuments submitted by applicants. Selected applicants are recommendedto the Japanese Government as applicants for the scholarship.Applicants will be informed of the result of this selection by aroundthe end of April, 2006.

5.2 2nd stage selection
The Japanese Government examines the documents of the applicantsrecommended by Kyoto University and decides whether the applicants areacceptable as recipients of the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho)Scholarship. Applicants will be informed of the final decision beforethe end of August, 2006. The Graduate School of Energy Science, KyotoUniversity, will send certificates of admission to students who havebeen admitted to the International Doctoral Program in Energy Scienceat the same time.

6. DOCUMENTS FOR THE 1ST AND 2ND STAGE SELECTION

Note: Among the following documents, the applicant must use theoriginal formats as they are for items (1), (2) and (3). Before fillingin the necessary matters by typewriting, make clear copies from thewebsite on the separate sheets for items (1) and (3) and also makecopies on both side of two page sheets for item (2).
The sheets for the items (2) and (3) include some Japanese in the samemeaning as the English. When the Japanese cannot be printed dependingon the printers, we will send the copies of the sheets according to therequest of applicant.

(3) Certificate of health issued within the last 2 months (download ).
(4) A copy of an official document verifying the applicant's nationality. (This can be a photocopy of the applicant's passport.)
(5) Certificates of Bachelors and Masters Degrees (or equivalents).
(6) Official academic records of undergraduate and graduate levels.
(7) Recommendation letter addressed to the president of Kyoto University written by the dean of the graduate school.
(8) Recommendation letter written by the supervisor, or equivalentperson, at the undergraduate level and / or at the graduate level.
(9) Recommendation letter written by the head of the applicant's employer (if the applicant is currently working ).
(10) Research plan at Kyoto University (3 pages of A4 sheets).
(11) List of scientific publications.
(12) Brief description of academic achievements (3pages of A4 sheet).
(13) A copy of Master Thesis (or equivalent).
(14) Summary of Masters Thesis (or equivalent, 3 pages of A4 sheets).
(15) Photograph taken within the last 6 months to be attached to (2).
(16) A copy of an official TOEFL (Test of English as a ForeignLanguage), GRE (Graduate Record Examination) General Test or TOEIC(Test of English for International Communication) score for a testtaken within the last 12 months unless the applicant's mother tongue isEnglish.

Note: Please use the following codes when requesting your scores besent to the Graduate School of Energy Science, Kyoto University:
 Institution Code: 3814, Department Code: 1605 for GRE General Test and
 Institution Code: 9501, Department Code: 69 for TOEFL.

All of the above documents except for (13) must be written in English, and will not be returned to the applicant.

7. TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE 1ST STAGE SELECTION
Each applicant should contact his/her prospective supervisor at KyotoUniversity through an introduction by his/her supervisor at the homeuniversity before application.  This approach is highlyrecommended as the program is fundamentally based upon the Agreement ofInternational Academic Exchange between the home university and KyotoUniversity.

8. APPLICATION PROCEDURE OF THE 2ND STAGE SELECTION
Kyoto University will inform applicants who have passed the 1st stageselection of the application procedure for the 2nd stage selection bythe Japanese Government.
