TheIMF, in cooperation with the government of Japan,has been administering the IMF Scholarship Program for Advanced Studiessince the 1990s. The objective of the program is to enhance thefinancialand economic policymaking capacity of governments in Asia and topromote high-quality and sustainable growth in the region, and also totrain potential candidates for staff economist positions at the Fund.

How to apply for the Japan-IMFScholarship Program for Advanced Studies

TheJapan-IMF Scholarship Program for Advanced Studies is targeted tonationals of IMF Asian member countries interested in studying fortheir doctorates in economics in order to work in an internationalfinancial institution (such as the IMF or the World Bank) or intheir home administrations.

Toapply for the program, candidates must show that they have beenadmitted to a Ph.D. program in economics at one of North America's or Australia'sleading universities.

Thoseselected for the Scholarship Program attend an orientation coursein Washington, D.C., shortly before they begin their studies attheir respective university. Scholarships cover all reasonable costsfor the first two years of study. Scholars are expected to secureanother source of funding to cover the remaining years of study.

Scholarshipsare awarded in the spring, for studies starting in the fall of thatyear. Candidates must apply directly to North American or Australian universitiesfor admission. The deadline for receipt of scholarship applicationsis December 31.
