Art. 3 - THE PhD PROGRAMME

The PhD Programme will tackle questionsregarding the exegesis of literary works, with shared courses and researchseminars (e.g. the phenomenon of linguistic and metric normalisation of textsin tradition and the possibility of counteracting this factor of disturbance;intertextuality as an instrument for the constitution of text and for itsexegesis in the continuity of literary forms, in intra and interlinguisticcontexts; editorial criteria in ancient and modern texts and prevalent exegeticmethods in Italy and in the main research institutes in and beyond Europe),whereas it will use specific seminars for each of the two subjects to handleissues that most directly involve the research subjects proposed to thestudents in the fields of classic and modern literature.

Regarding the scope of the areas ofresearch envisaged by the School, a number of interdisciplinary topics will behandled, concerning both the constitution of literary objects (the relationshipbetween writers and their respective social forms, institutions, religious andfolkloristic traditions constituting macro and micro intertextuality, anddifferent forms of communication and reception) and their exegesis. Relationswith historical disciplines will be dealt with at length, to shed light on theconditions in which the works were produced and communicated - including thespecific forms of communication, in the perspective of the expectation horizonsof the relative recipients - and to evaluate the relevance of constitutive andexegetic methods in ancient and modern works, and the limits within which theconclusions of those who have made use of these methods in theirinterpretations may be considered. The collaboration between ancient and modernliterary specialists in the School will principally deal with the history ofclassic tradition in ancient and modern literature.

The PhD Programme will deal with thefollowing issues:

 - forsubject a. "Greek and Latin literary language": the traditions of Latin andGreek texts in the ancient and modern world and, in particular, in theirliterary and historical and cultural prospects, and the hermeneutics of printedtradition, to define the historical process by which texts have been passed on,constituted and interpreted, and to identify the cultural elements that haveinfluenced their reception and exegesis;

- for subject b. "Traditions in the textsand history of Italian literature": manuscript and printing traditions inItalian works, with particular regard for the social aspects of culturalproduction (editors, periodicals, etc.) and on the historical aspects of theirinterpretation and reception (relations between authors and the public, thequestion of literary genres, the fortune of classic works, etc.).

The course will be structured around thetopics of the two complementary areas considered by the doctorate: classicalliterature and ancient history; Italian literature.

The programme will be organised in futurein courses, seminar cycles, study encounters, and participation ininternational conventions and seminars organised in Trento and elsewhere, ateither associated institutions or other national and international researchinstitutes, to balance the information from each disciplinary andmultidisciplinary approach, both during the course programme and duringresearch work.

A period of research and study abroad iscompulsory for students taking subject a. "Greek and Latin literary language",and must take place during either the second or third year of the course, inaccordance with academic opportunities. This period will last one academic year.

Admission to the second year is subject tothe approval of the Graduate School Committee on the basis of the students' resultsfrom the courses and research seminars proposed. Doctorate students will haveto attend an assessment interview at the end of the academic year on thedisciplines taught, and are required, at least twice during the academic year,to submit written material illustrating the progress of their research, forapproval by the Graduate School Committee. This material will be submitted inwriting before the seminar discussion, and will be discussed during the seminaritself.
