Ireland: Aquaculture Research M.Sc Position

The Research for Alternative Culture Enterprises group (RACE) has obtained funding for research on Wild fish stock selection for out-of-season spawning development in Irish Perch aquaculture industry. The project duration is 24 months and the successful candidate will be required to register for a M.Sc. in the Department of Life and Physical Sciences, GMIT.

This project aims to assess geographic variation in juvenile and adult growth rate, maturity, weight-at-age, egg quality and survival to determine the most suitable strain(s) to be used in perch aquaculture operations. Year-round “out-of-seasonal” juvenile supply is achieved by subjecting adults to artificial environments mimicking their natural development season (i.e. temperature and light regimes), and this will be developed for perch in this project.

Qualifications (Minimum & Desirable) and/or Required Experience:The applicant must have an honours degree in Zoology, Aquatic Biology, Aquatic Resource Management, or a related discipline (2:2 or better). Knowledge of aquaculture recirculation systems and/or fish husbandry would be desirable. A full driving license and own transport will be an advantage, in addition to the ability to work in the field and laboratory environment. Good communication skills will be essential, as will the desire to be involved in an extremely applied project that has strong links to non-academic entities.
