International Research Scholarships (IRS)
We offer approximately 30 partial scholarships each year to encourage well-qualified international graduates to undertake high-quality research at Newcastle.
* the value of the award is £2,000 per year against fees for up to three years, subject to satisfactory progress (Four years in the case of Integrated PhD students). In very exceptional circumstances, the value of the IRS may be increased to £4,000 per year at the discretion of the Scholarships Committee
* part-time students may receive the scholarship at the appropriate pro-rata rate

Full-time candidates applying for an IRS award are also encouraged to apply for an Overseas Research Student (ORS) award.
You are eligible to apply for an IRS award if* you have been offered a place on any research degree programme
* you intend to register to start your studies during the 2005-06 academic year
* you have been assessed as overseas for fees purposes, and are wholly or partially self-financing
* you are a national of or normally resident in one of the following countries:
Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Egypt, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Korea, Lebanon, Libya ,Mexico, Norway, Russia, Sri Lanka, Syria, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, USA.
If you are applying for a research degree programme and are not eligible for an IRS award, you may wish to consider applying for one of our International Postgraduate Scholarships (IPS). Please note that existing students (ie those who have already started their research course at Newcastle) are not eligible to apply for the IRS award.
How to apply
If you are eligible, you will automatically be sent application details from December onwards, and are encouraged to apply early. The Scholarships Committee meets on three occasions to consider applications, and the final closing date for receipt of completed scholarship application forms is 23 May 2005 .
All scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit.
Please note that if you are eligible to apply for an IRS award, you will not be eligible to apply for an International Postgraduate Scholarship (IPS).
