Interdisciplinary PhD Research Studentships in Photonics & Electronics - University of Nottingham
Interdisciplinary PhD Research Studentships in Photonics & Electronics
Applications are invited from well-qualified and highly motivated individuals to engage in interdisciplinary research in the area of photonics and electronics. The University of Nottingham Institute of Materials Technology (UNIMAT) has established an Interdisciplinary Doctoral Training Centre (IDTC) in Photonics and Electronics with the aim of developing and exploiting expertise in this exciting and dynamic field. The range of work covered by the IDTC can be illustrated by the following past projects:
- new non-oxide spintronic materials
- dilute nitride materials and devices
- optical and electrical characterisation of wide band gaps
- infrared fibres for medical spectroscopy
- fibre-on-glass
- novel photonic integrated circuits with distributed amplification
However, new areas of research are continually arising and the studentships may be in areas of photonics and electronics different to those listed.
Students should ideally hold a minimum of an upper second-class degree (or an international equivalent) in electrical and electronic engineering, physics, chemistry, material science or a closely related subject. A relevant Masters qualification will be an advantage, although not essential.
The successful students will be expected to register for a PhD.
The IDTC studentships are fully funded, covering tuition fees plus a minimum of £10,000 maintenance per year (though, where eligible, students may be advised to apply for other scholarships as a partial contribution to the total funding).
Informal enquiries, including those regarding the application process, may be addressed to Dr A Phillips, Email: andrew.phillips@nottingham.ac.uk. Information on the participating Schools is available here.
Applications should be made on the standard University postgraduate application form (see: https://pgapps.nottingham.ac.uk). In completing this form, please select the School (from the four listed above) which your interests and qualifications most closely match. You should indicate in the Personal Statement section of the form that your application is to be directed to the Photonics and Electronics IDTC.
Once you have applied, please Email Dr A Phillips, indicating: i) the School through which you have applied; ii) the date of your application; and iii) (where possible) your application number. This will ensure that your application receives full consideration by the IDTC.
Closing date: 14 January 2005.
