Awards of up to $12,000
Applications will be considered from those who:
- will be full-time graduate students or undergraduates with junior or senior standing in the 2005-2006 academic year,
- have a clearly demonstrated interest in the classicalliberal/libertarian tradition of individual rights and marketeconomies, and
- are interested in applying the principles of this tradition in their work.
The Humane Studies Fellowships, begun in 1983 as the Claude R. LambeFellowships, are awarded by the Institute for Humane Studies to supportthe work of outstanding students interested in the classicalliberal/libertarian tradition.

Applications will be considered from those who:
- will be full-time graduate students or undergraduates with junior or senior standing in the 2005-2006 academic year,
- have a clearly demonstrated interest in the classicalliberal/libertarian tradition of individual rights and marketeconomies, and
- are interested in applying the principles of this tradition in their work.
The Humane Studies Fellowships, begun in 1983 as the Claude R. LambeFellowships, are awarded by the Institute for Humane Studies to supportthe work of outstanding students interested in the classicalliberal/libertarian tradition. The core principles of this traditioninclude:
- the recognition of individual rights and the dignity and worth of each individual;
- protection of these rights through the institutions of privateproperty, contract, and the rule of law, and through freely evolvedintermediary institutions; and
- voluntarism in all human relations, including the unhampered marketmechanism in economic affairs and the goals of free trade, freemigration, and peace.
Awards are based on:
- academic or professional performance,
- relevance of one's work to the advancement of a free society, and
- potential for success.
Please note the following stipulations:
- Amounts awarded take into account the cost of tuition at the recipient's institution and any other funds received.
- Full scholarships cannot be awarded to students who will bereceiving full-tuition scholarships and/or stipends from other sources,although such students may still be considered for partial awards.Approximately ninety scholarships are given each year.
- Humane Studies Fellowships are awarded for one year; students are eligible to reapply in subsequent years.
- All qualified men and women will be considered for Humane StudiesFellowships without regard to race, religion, national or ethnicorigin, citizenship, or handicap.
- Award decisions by IHS and its trustees are final and not subject to appeal.
