Graduate Studentships and Scholarships

The information which follows relates to awards available from October2005. It is expected that information on awards for October 2006 willbe available by mid-November 2005.

University awards

Studentships and scholarships

Over 40 University awards will be available for full-time graduate students beginning courses in 2005.

For PhD students, studentships cover the tuition fee (at the home/EUrate) and living expenses in full or in part. For MA, MSc and MResstudents, scholarships cover the tuition fee (at the home/EU rate);York Alumni Fund Postgraduate Studentships (open to MA, MSc or MResstudents) also include a substantial contribution to living expenses.

PhD awards also provide holders with the opportunity to gain valuableteaching experience as part of the award; training is given by theStaff Development Office and the department concerned.

Many departments also have studentships and scholarships available;please contact the relevant department or look at its web pages forfurther information.

The University is also offering two White Rose collaborative research studentships with the Universities of Leeds and Sheffield in specific research areas.

Applications for research awards and masters awards should be submittedas soon as possible and by 31 May 2005 at the latest. (Some departmentsmay take decisions before 31 May 2005. Applications received after thatdate may be considered where awards remain to be allocated.) Applicantsshould indicate that they wish to be considered for one of these awardswhen they apply to the University.

1. Eligibility

You are eligible for consideration for an award if you intend to begin,in October 2005, as a full-time student, a course of study leading to ahigher degree (PhD, MA, MSc or MRes). Home and EU candidates may applyfor any award. Overseas candidates may apply for research studentshipsand masters scholarships, but not for York Alumni Fund PostgraduateStudentships; they will be required to demonstrate, before the offer ofan award is confirmed, that they have sufficient funds to cover thebalance of the tuition fee. Only candidates who have or expect toobtain a first or upper second class honours degree (or equivalent)should apply.

Applicants for the PhD may apply for a research studentship. Applicantsfor the MA, MSc or MRes may apply for a masters scholarship or (home/EUcandidates only) a York Alumni Fund Postgraduate Studentship.

Candidates must also apply for an ESRC award, AHRB award or ORS award, if eligible.Overseas candidates who are too late to apply for ORS awards, or whoseapplications for ORS awards are unsuccessful, must apply again in thefollowing year for an ORS award to cover their second and third years.

Any candidate who is offered a University award but is subsequentlysuccessful in obtaining a Research Council/AHRB studentship will berequired to forfeit the University award, as will any candidate whofails to meet the conditions of admission set out in an offer of aplace for graduate study.

Further particulars of the different types of award and their availability are given below.

2. PhD research studentships

(a) Full research studentships

Full research studentships comprise a tuition fee waiver (at thehome/EU rate) and an annual maintenance grant at the standard researchcouncil rate (£12,000 in 2005/06). Award-holders will be required toundertake 66 hours of teaching each year in their department. Fullresearch studentships will be awarded for up to three years offull-time study towards the PhD degree, subject to satisfactoryacademic progress and satisfactory performance of teaching duties.

Twenty full research studentships are available, in the following departments:

(b) Half research studentships

Half research studentships comprise a tuition fee waiver (at thehome/EU rate) and an annual maintenance grant (£6,000 in 2005/06).(Successful applicants will be asked to demonstrate, beforeregistration, that they have sufficient funds to cover the balance oftheir living expenses.) Award-holders will be required to undertake 36hours of teaching each year in their department. Half researchstudentships will be awarded for up to three years of full-time studytowards the PhD degree, subject to satisfactory academic progress andsatisfactory performance of teaching duties.

Three half research studentships are available, in the following departments:

  • Biology
  • Environment

3. Masters scholarships

Masters scholarships consist of a tuition fee waiver at the home/EUrate, and are open to candidates for the one-year MA, MSc or MResdegree. (Successful applicants will be asked to demonstrate, beforeregistration, that they have sufficient funds to cover their livingexpenses and, if overseas, the balance of the tuition fee.)

Seventeen masters scholarships are available, in the following departments:

  • Archaeology
  • Biology
  • Economics (for MSc courses in Economics, Econometrics and Economics, Economic and Social Policy Analysis, or Public Economics)
  • English (for MA course in Cultures of Empire, Resistance and Postcoloniality)
  • History of Art
  • Mathematics (for MSc course in Data Analysis, Networks andNonlinear Dynamics or MRes course in Mathematics and the LivingEnvironment)
  • Medieval Studies
  • Music (for MA courses in Music or Community Music)
  • Philosophy (for MA course in Philosophy)
  • Psychology (for MSc course in Applied Forensic Psychology or MRes course in Psychology)
  • Social Policy (for MA course in Social Policy)
  • Women's Studies (for MA courses in Women's Studies: Humanities or Women's Studies: Social Research)

4. York Alumni Fund Postgraduate Studentships (for MA/MSc/MRes candidates)

Throughthe generosity of its alumni, it is expected that the University willbe able to offer three York Alumni Fund Postgraduate Studentships in2005/06.

These awards will be open to home/EU candidates for a one-year full-time MA, MSc or MRes course in any department.The total value of the award is expected to be £6820, comprising atuition fee waiver and a substantial contribution to living costs.Preference will be given to York graduates and to those who might nototherwise be able to study at York.

(Some departments may take decisionsbefore 31 May 2005. Applications received after that date may beconsidered where awards remain to be allocated.)

6. Notification of awards

All successful candidates will be notified of the result of theirapplication by the department concerned. Candidates who have not heardby mid-September 2005 should assume that their application has beenunsuccessful.

Please note that an offer of a place on a programme of study at Yorkdoes not imply an offer of an award and that successful applicants forawards will be notified by the departments separately.
