TheCentre for Microdata Methods and Practice (cemmap) seeks a PhD scholarto start October 1st 2005. This person will work within and be fundedby the EU's Research and Training Network (RTN) "Microdata Methods andPractice". The other organisations involved in the Network are CAM(Copenhagen), CEMFI (Madrid), CNRS-EUREQua (Paris), Tinbergen Institute(Rotterdam and Amsterdam) and IFAU (Uppsala).

Research

Muchof the research to be conducted by the Network falls under thefollowing substantive themes: Consumer behaviour and economic welfare;Policy and programme evaluation methods; The empirical analysis ofgames and auctions; Methods for longitudinal/panel data analysis;Labour markets; and Health. These six themes and the Network's generalinterest in methodological development, will serve as focal points fortraining, research collaboration and interaction between partners inthe Network and affiliated nodes.

TheNetwork has an extensive training programme which includes doctoralprogramme courses, short courses, master-classes, workshops,international conferences and seminars and network meetings. Thedoctoral student will be able to choose from the wide variety oftraining offered by the Network partners.

Profile

To beconsidered for this post, a candidate needs to have obtained a gooddegree in economics or other (social) science. The degree must have asubstantial quantitative component.

Eligible candidates arenationals from a European Union Member or Associated States (not UK) ornon-EU nationals if they have been resident in the EU (not UK) for morethan 4 out of the last 5 years. Candidates should not have beenresident in the UK for more then 12 months out of the last 36 monthsimmediately prior to the start date. UK nationals are eligible if theyhave been resident outside the EU for more than 4 out of the last 5years. The Network can appoint some non-EU nationals that have not beenresident in the EU for more than 4 out of the last 5 years.

Thesuccessful candidate will register as a full-time Ph.D. student at theDepartment of Economics, University College London. The EU-fundedscholarship will be for two years. The basic living allowance will beEuro 34,368 per year with a further monthly mobility allowance of Euro562 for single and Euro 900 for researchers with a partner and/orchildren. Both basic allowance and mobility allowance are subject to UKtaxes and national insurance. Fees payable to UCL are currently £3,000(approximately Euro 4,500) per year. If necessary, a third year ofscholarship will be provided for by other sources of funding.
