THE EAST-WEST CENTER GRADUATE DEGREE FELLOWSHIP

Graduate Degree Fellowships are available to individuals interested in participating in the educational and research programs of the East-West Center while pursuing graduate degree study at the University of Hawai‘i. Fellowships for both master's (24 month) and doctoral (48 month) degrees are available.

Center scholarships aregiven for degree study at the University of Hawai‘i and participationin the Center's international and intercultural programs. Recipients ofthe fellowship who are single or married with no accompanyingdependents below 18 years of age are required to reside in Centerdormitories. The Center and the University of Hawai‘i, located in aunique island setting with a distinctive multicultural heritage, offerpremier resources for Asian, Pacific and U.S. studies.

In addition, the Center and the University of Hawai‘i offer interdisciplinary certificate programsin Leadership Studies, International Cultural Studies, PopulationStudies, and Resource Management. Degree fellows must be involved in anEast-West Center research project or complete a certificate program.

GENERAL APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must also apply for admission to a graduate program ofthe University of Hawai‘i, if not currently enrolled as a classifiedgraduate student. Required tests include the Test of English as aForeign Language (TOEFL) and the GRE or GMAT as required by Universityof Hawai‘i departments.

Eligibility:Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United Statesor citizens of countries in Asia and the Pacific including Russia.

All award recipients who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents must meet all exchange visitor (J-visa) requirements.


Other Application Requirements:
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) TheGRE General (Aptitude) Test is no longer a requirement of allapplicants of the East-West Center, but if the University of Hawai‘ifield of study requirements state that an applicant must take the GRE,an official copy of the applicant's GRE score must be submitted to theEast-West Center. Refer to the UH application sheet for requirements specific to each field of study.

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)All applicants from countries in which English is not the only officiallanguage (including U.S. Nationals and Permanent Resident Aliens forwhom English is not their native language) are required to demonstrateadvanced proficiency in the use of the English language. Proficiency isdemonstrated by taking the Test of English as a Foreign language(TOEFL). The EWC minimum TOEFL score is 550 (213 for the computer basedTOEFL examination) unless a higher score is specified in the UHapplication information/instructions.

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)The IELTS may be substituted for TOEFL. An overall band test result of5.00 is required for admission to the University of Hawai‘i. TheEast-West Center preferred minimum is 6.00.

  • Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)
    The GMAT is a University of Hawai‘i requirement for all Accounting,Business Administration, and Travel Industry Management applicants.
  • Official Transcripts Two(2) official transcripts from each college or university where creditsand grades (including summer course) have been earned are required.

  • Letters of Reference TheEast-West Center requires three (3) letters of reference completed bypersons who have played a significant role in the education or workexperience of the applicant. One letter of reference must addresscommunity service/extracurricular activity involvement. Letters fromsenior professors in the major field are also very helpful.


  • Degree Fellowship Requirements:

    Beyond fulfilling degreerequirements at the University of Hawai‘i, East-West Center studentsare required to take part in the Center's education program. Theserequirements include:

    • Core Program that meets weekly during the fall semester.
    • Spring Core Issues Course, which will consist of a series of presentations and small-group discussions.
    • Community Service. Degree Fellows are expected to devote 90 hours to community service during their award period.
    • Involvement in an EWC Research Project.
    • Interdisciplinary Certificate. Students not involved in an EWC research project must pursue one of several interdisciplinary certificates.
    • Language Requirement.Degree Fellows who are native speakers of English from USA, Australiaor New Zealand must demonstrate proficiency in an Asian/Pacificlanguage or complete four semesters of language coursework.
    • Monthly Report to the Associate Dean.

    Priority in the studentselection process is given to applicants seeking degrees in fields ofstudy related to themes of the Center's research program, focusing ontopics in international economics, politics and security studies, theenvironment, and population and health.

    East-West Centerfellowships support full-time participation in a degree program at theUniversity of Hawai‘i at Manoa and in educational programs at the Center
