Principles and Goals of the Course
The postgraduate course “Master of Peace and Security Policy Studies†(M.P. S.) is conducted by the University of Hamburg in cooperation with theInstitut für Friedensforschung und Sicherheitspolitik (IFSH) and otherscientific institutions and partners of the network “Friedensforschung undSicherheitspolitik†(KoFrieS). The Deutsche Stiftung Friedensforschung(DSF) and the German Academic Exchange Service (GAES) offer scholarshipsfor this course.
The M. P. S.-course is trans- and interdisciplinarily orientated. It ismeant as a combination of “hands on†and classroom-based learning. Thecourse aims at introducing highly qualified humanities and sciencesgraduates from German or foreign universities as well as academicallyqualified, experienced practicioners to problems of peace- andsecurity-policy and to fundamental issues relating their practicalapplication. Furthermore, the course aims at imparting methods and insightsof peace research and thus at preparing the students for work inpeace-studies research and teaching or for practical work for national andinternational organisations, administrations, associations, and businesses(e. g. peace-keeping, monitoring, verification, development aid, mediation,arbitration, conversion, administration).
Admission Requirements
The course is designed for students who wish to work in the fields of peacestudies or peace- and security-policy. Applicants must have 240 points ECTS(usually a four-year course) and must have achieved an honours degree at aGerman or foreign university. Applications showing professional interestand scientific or practical experience in fields related to problems ofpeace and international security will be prefered. As both teaching andresearch are done in German and English, sufficient knowledge of bothlanguages is required. Students may choose whether to complete courseworkand examinations, including their master´s thesis, in the English or Germanlanguage.
Language Skills
A good working knowledge of both German and English is required foradmission. Appropriate evidence must be provided by the applicants.Concerning German language skills, the German Language Examination forForeign Students´ Admission to University (Sprachprüfung für denHochschulzugang ausländischer Studierender) (DSH), the examination Germanas a Foreign Language, or any examination of equal value are accepted.
Concerning English language skills, the TOEFL (230 points/570 paper-based)(www.toefl.org), the IELTS (5.5), the Advanced C, or any examination ofequal value are accepted.
Applicants who are German or English native speakers are not required toprove their skills.
Financial Support
The DSF grants a total of 15 scholarships of € 1000,- each. The AdmissionsCommittee decides about who will receive a scholarship. There will be nodistinctions between German and foreign applicants. Interest in ascholarship should be mentioned in the letter of application. Furthermore,for students from the countries of the Stability Pact for South-EasternEurope there is a limited number of scholarships from GAES funds.Additionally, applicants already holding a scholarship (e. g. a GAESscholarship) may apply.

Certificates and other documentary evidence must be provided in German orEnglish. Translations must be officialy certified. Only complete documentsreceived on time will be accepted.
Applications for the academic year 2005/6 must be received between December15th, 2005 and March 15th, 2006.
