Phd/Postdoc Position in Matheon Project A1 “Modelling, Simulation andOptimal Control of Thermoregulation in the Human Vascular System”

The position is concerned with mathematical therapy planning for regionaland local hyperthermia. This cancer therapy aims at heating tumors bymicrowave radiation or ultrasound absorption. The applicators introducingenergy into the body have to be controlled in such a way that the highestpossible thermal dose is supplied to the tumor, but surrounding healthytissue is not damaged due to high temperature. The mathematical treatmentof this complex control problem involves the computation of the specificabsorption rate, simulation of the heat transport in perfused tissue, andoptimization of the applicator controls. All computations need to becarried out on individual 3D virtual patient models.

The successful candidate will be concerned with the development andintegration of simulation and optimization algorithms for hyperthermiatreatment planning inside a virtual lab.

We are looking for candidates holding a master/diploma in mathematics.Applicants must have thorough knowledge in numerical analysis. Familiaritywith optimization algorithms, interdisciplinary modelling, and theory andnumerics of partial differential equations is desirable. Programmingskills in C++ are required. Experience with large FEM packages isappreciated.
