Germany: PhD Scholarships in Mathematics in Industry and Commerce, The University of Kaiserslautern

The programme has a duration of 36 months supplemented by a two months preparatory German language course in the beginning. The programme is entirely in English.

For 20 months the PhD student does research at the University of Kaiserslautern and another 9 months at or for a company. The topic of the PhD thesis is fixed in cooperation with a company, either directly by the student or with the help of “Fraunhofer-Institute for Industrial Mathematics (ITWM)”, the supervisor at the home university and the co-supervisor at the University of Kaiserslautern. Students apply modern mathematical theories (partial differential equations, stochastics, etc.) to model technological, economic and ecological problems. Computer-oriented numerical methods (FEM, optimization, statistics, etc.) are used to evaluate the models. The last 7 months are used to complete the research and the thesis at the home university. After successful completion of the programme, the student receives a PhD degree from his/her home university.

This programme is suited for mathematicians, physicists and engineers with a strong background in mathematics. The programme starts in October and is preceded by a German language course of 2 months duration, beginning in August. Application deadline is January 30, at the University of Kaiserslautern.

Entry requirement:

  • Admittance as PhD student at the home university;
  • Supervisor for a PhD thesis at the home university;
  • English - TOEFL (540 points) or IELTS (band 6) -certificate;
