Germany: PhD Scholarships in Linguistics at the University of Stuttgart

The graduate programme “Linguistic representations and theirinterpretation” (”Linguistische Repräsentationen und ihreInterpretation”)is pleased to announce the availability of 7 doctoralscholarships. Thescholarships will start on September 1st, 2006. The positions areavailablefor 2 years but can be extended to 32 months (or even to 36 monthssubjectto the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft granting extra funding oncethethird term of funding for the graduate school has run out).
The graduate programme is a structured doctoral programme inlinguisticsand computational linguistics at the University of Stuttgart.Theparticipating lecturers are: Artemis Alexiadou, Rainer Bäuerle,GregorzDogil, Ulrich Heid, Klaus von Heusinger, Hans Kamp, Bernd Möbius,JürgenPafel, Christian Rohrer, Hinrich Schütze and Achim Stein.

Applicants for the scholarships should:be no older than 28 years of age;hold a Diplom, an M.A., or an equivalent academic degree;be able to read and understand English and German;be prepared to take an active part in the work of the graduateschool. Thisincludes both scientific work (lectures, seminars, workshops,etc.) andorganisational work.
Applications are accepted in German and English. Applicationsshould contain:
- a letter of application (no formal requirements);
- the names, addresses, and e-mail addresses of two people whowill send aletter of reference. Please, arrange for the two letters ofreference to besent directly to the Director of the programme (see below);
- a Ph.D. dissertation proposal, possibly written after adiscussion withyour prospective supervisor in the graduate school (the proposalshouldmake reference to one of the projects of the programme);
- a CV including transcript, results of examinations, classesattended.
Applications of women are specifically invited. In the case ofsimilarqualifications, competence, and specific achievements, women will beconsidered on preferential terms within the framework of the legalpossibilities. Handicapped candidates with equivalentqualifications willbe given preference.
