Worms, viruses, phishing, spyware, spam, denial-of-service attacks, andother deliberate attacks on networks and workstations are major problems on theInternet and cause huge economic losses. Misbehaved and misconfiguredapplications, illegal communications, and accidental disclosure of confidentialinformation present additional problems. Current technologies for addressingthese problems have serious limitations, both in terms of the limited accuracywith which they distinguish legitimate from illegitimate usage, the complexityof their deployment, and the computational and network overhead they require.

The goal of this project is to developtechniques for making network security tools more intelligent in order toimprove their accuracy and reduce the cost for their deployment and operation.This will require a combination of approaches:

• efficient instrumentation and data collection from network devices and workstations
• stream-based database systems
• stream-based data mining
• resource-constrained, multi-stage pattern recognition
• data summarization and visualization tools and techniques
• multimedia content analysis
• statistical traffic analysis

The exact thesis topic and approach(practical, systems-oriented, theoretical) will be determined by the interestsand background of the successful applicant. Applicants should have a backgroundin at least one of the areas of data mining, database and query architectures,pattern recognition, statistical machine learning, or computer security.
