A PhD position is available at the MaxPlanck Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching, near Munich. Theposition is in the Max Planck Independent Junior Research Group forPhotonics, which is part of the Division of Laser Spectroscopy andUltracold Quantum Gases of Professor T.W. Hänsch.

The group`s work is situated in the area of chip-based opticalmicro-cavities. These structures can trap light in micro-scale volumesfor extended amounts of time, and find application in a variety offundamental and applied studies, ranging from telecommunications,nonlinear and quantum optics, cavity quantum electrodynamics to lasersand biochemical sensors.

The candidate has the possibility to join two recently startedprojects, which pertain to the study of radiation pressure inducedcavity cooling of mechanical modes and to the generation of frequencycombs using microcavities. Furthermore, opportunities exist to work onnew projects, such as the on-chip generation and characterization ofsqueezed states of light, or combining atomic micro-traps withchip-based optical micro-cavities. Requirementsare a degree in Physics or related field, as well as a keen interest inexperiments at the interface of micro-fabrication with quantum andnonlinear optics. Micro-fabrication experience is advantageous but notrequired. Candidates with a completed diploma thesis in AMO-Physics areparticularly welcome to apply. Candidates are expected to superviseDiploma students.

The PhD position is available as of December 1st 2006 or later. PhDcandidates will receive an EU contract for a duration of 3 years.
