Studentships available in the Life Sciences Graduate Program of theInternational University Bremen, “Biological Recognition” (BioRec).

The graduate school “Biological Recognition” (BioRec) at theInternational University Bremen (IUB) has studentships available tobegin in September, 2007. Application deadlines are February 1st andMay 1st, 2007.

IUB (http://www.iu- bremen.de) is a private research and teachinguniversity in the Arts and Sciences in Northern Germany, founded in1999. We attract the very best students worldwide to our American-typeBSc and MSc degree programs. The working language on Campus isEnglish.

The Molecular Life Sciences graduate program, BioRec (http://www.iu-bremen.de/ biorec), is focused on biological recognition, one of themost fascinating phenomena of life. Specific recognition events occurat all levels of complexity in biological systems, and theirinvestigation requires a convergence of the disciplines of the lifesciences, including, but not limited to, structural and computationalbiology, biochemistry, biophysics, cell biology, immunology,physiology, and biotechnology. Faculty from these and neighboringareas have come together in BioRec to combine their expertise inresearch and teaching.

Students who enter BioRec with a Bachelor of Science or equivalent(that is, three years of study in a life sciences subject - includingthree years of study in a German Diplom program) are taken to thedegree of M.Sc. within five years. In addition to practical trainingin three rotation laboratories and the doctoral thesis research,BioRec offers a combination of carefully designed didactic courses, alively seminar program with opportunities for oral presentation anddiscussion of scientific information and hypotheses, and teachingexperience in undergraduate courses.

There are about ten full stipends available. They consists of a waiverof the study fees at IUB, and a monthly allowance to cover food,housing, and personal expenses,, and are guaranteed for two years.Students who do well in the MSc stage can, after 18 months, directlytransfer to their PhD thesis work without MSc thesis and examination.This is dependent on an offer of financial suppport from a facultymember.

IUB is an excellent place for graduate training in the life sciences:faculty have ambitious and interactive research programs, scientificwork takes place in new and well-equipped laboratories, and othergraduate (such as Nanomolecular Sciences) and undergraduate programs(Biology, Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Bioinformatics andComputational Biology, Biochemical Engineering) create a vigorousscientific environment.

As students for the BioRec graduate program, we seek applicants withoutstanding undergraduate records in the biological, chemical, orphysical sciences who show great promise of successful careers inresearch.
