Germany: Doctoral Fellowships From Ernst Schering Foundation


Who is eligible to apply?
Biologists, chemists, medical doctors as well as students of specific interdisciplinary studies (e. g. biochemistry, bioinformatics), who completed their studies with outstanding results no more than two years before the time of application and who are not older than 28 years of age. The Ph. D. thesis should not have been started at the time of the application.

Project subject matter
Support will be given for doctorates that will deal with subjects of basic scientific research in the spheres of biology, medicine and organic chemistry (as well as all areas where they interface). Projects from the sectors of botany and dentistry are not being sponsored, nor are any projects that have the goal of carrying out clinical studies.

Amount and tenure of fellowship
€ 1,200 per month, plus € 100 allowance for material costs, together with a country weighting, for the duration of two years. The fellowship includes an allowance for travel to a conference and a monthly child supplement of € 150. Moreover the fellow will be invited to the Fellows’ Meeting of the Ernst Schering Foundation. The Schering Fellows Network is an initiative designed to maintain contacts between fellows and alumni, promote friendships and professional collaboration.

How to apply
The application has to be in English and must include the following information:

  • Cover page (application form) including name, age, etc., and a short summary of the research project,
  • maximum ten-page description of the background and goals of the research project
  • curriculum vitae with photo
  • copy of academic diplomas (please see guidelines for the doctoral fellowships for detailed information)
  • letter of recommendation by the current head of the research project
  • letter of approval by the head of the host laboratory, stating that the planned research can be carried out. If the supervisor for the intended research is the same person who has overseen previous research activities, an additional expert opinion has to be submitted from a member of the academic staff or a person of similar rank.
  • a brief description giving the reasons for choosing a particular guest laboratory, the assurance that necessary academic support is in place, and sufficient means are there to enable the proper running of experiments (academic reputation, laboratory equipment).
