European Masters in Informatics at Edinburgh University
European Masters in Informatics
This is a two-year course sponsored by the EC Programme Erasmus Mundus.
The University of Edinburgh (Scotland), together with the RWTHAachen University (Germany), and the University of Trento (Italy),offers a two-year (120 ECTS credits) Joint Masters Programme, namedEuropean Master in Informatics (EuMI). The objective of this MastersProgramme is to educate professionals who will understand advancedtechniques, tools, and methodologies in the field of Computer Science, and who will be able to put this knowledge to practice in the keyapplication domains of Net-Centric Informatics, Life ScienceInformatics, and Embedded Systems Informatics.
The Program will admit a maximum number of 40 students for academic year 2005/06.
Programme Structure
The Masters Course lasts two years. For each area of specialization,a joint curriculum is defined which involves two universities of theConsortium. The student admitted to a selected curriculum will spend ayear at each university, taking courses on advanced topics intheoretical and practical Computer Science, and with a focus on theselected area of specialization. Each student will be allocated a 'mainuniversity' where they will spend the initial part of thir studies andwhere they will be based while writing their thesis.
Courses are taught in English.
Upon the successful completion of the course students will beawarded a double degree, consisting of a degree from each of the twovisited universities. The awarded degrees correspond to:
- a Master of Science in Computer Science or Media Informatics from the RWTH Aachen University
- a Master of Science in Informatics from the University of Edinburgh
- a Master of Science in Informatics from the University of Trento
Studentships
The course has a built-in studentship of 21.000 EUR per year, which is available to students from outside the EU only, and is funded by the European Commission wihin the Erasmus Mundusprogramme. For academic year 2005/06, a maximum number of 27scholarships are offered for students from countries outside the EU,some of which are specifically reserved for applicants from Asiancountries. A limited number of additional scholarships may be availableeach year.
The Specialisms
The course covers domains that, being emergent, rapidly evolving, and of growing impact on society, require specialized competencies notcovered by more traditional degree programs.
Net-Centric Informatics
This specialization covers all those aspects of informatics relatedto the design, implementation and analysis of distributed, ubiquitousinformation and computing systems. This area covers a wide range oftopics, ranging from network architectures and communicationinfrastructures to techniques for the design and analysis ofdistributed knowledge, media applications and large-scale informationsystems, to the design and implementation of distributed web-serviceapplications.
Life-Science Informatics
This area of specialization will prepare professionals at theintersection of the study of Life-Science (biology, neuroscience, cognitive sciences) and the study of computation and engineering.Students will take basic courses on the fundamentals of biology and/orcognitive science and advanced courses studying the application ofcomputer science techniques to the analysis of structural andbehavioral aspects of biological and cognitive systems.
Embedded Systems Informatics
This specialization introduces the fundamental principles underlyingthe theory and the practical design and implementation of embeddedsystems. Moreover, it allows students to put these principles intopractice in applications in the area of control systems (e.g.,controllers for automotive systems or industrial plants) and to ambientintelligence applications (e.g., domotics or sensors networks).
Apply
The application requires two steps: an on-line application (due by January 31st, 2005) and the hard-copy submission of documents (due by February 15th, 2005).
