European Master in Informatics 2005-2006
General Information
The University of Trento (Italy), the RWTH Aachen University (Germany), and the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) are offering a two-year Joint Master Programme, named European Master in Informatics (EuMI).The objective is to educate professionals who will understand advancedtechniques, tools, and methodologies in the field of Computer Science, and who will be able to put this knowledge to practice in keyapplication domains. In particular, EuMI offers three areas ofspecialization in Net-Centric Informatics, Life-Science Informatics, and Embedded Systems Informatics. These are application domains that, being emergent, rapidly evolving, and of growing impact on the society, require specialized competenciesnot covered by more traditional degree programmes.
For each area of specialization, a Joint Curriculum is definedwhich involves two Universities. The student undertaking the Curriculumwill visit both Universities, taking courses focusing on advancedtopics in Theoretical and Practical Computer Science and on theselected area of specialization. Courses are taught in English and arestructured according to the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System).Students will undertake courses on the culture and language of thevisited European countries. At the end of the Programme, a MasterThesis will be prepared on a research topic jointly selected with thetwo visited Universities. At the successful completion of EuMI,students will be awarded a Master of Informatics and will receive adegree from each of the Universities where they spent a part of theirstudy: a "Laurea Specialistica in Informatica" ("Specialist Degree inComputer Science") by the University of Trento, a "Master of Science inComputer Science" by the RWTH Aachen University, a "Master of Sciencein Informatics" by the University of Edinburgh.
The EuMI programme is intended for a small number of top levelinternational students. In order to guarantee a ratio between theteachers involved in the Joint Master and the EuMI students of close toone, a maximum of 30 students per year will be selected. Candidatesshould have a solid background in basic Computer Science disciplinesand a keen interest in the fields of Net-Centric Informatics, EmbeddedSystems Infromatics, or Life-Sciences Informatics. Prerequisites are afirst level degree in Computer Science or closely related disciplinesand a fluent knowledge in spoken and written English.
Admission Requirement
The fundamental prerequisites for admission to the ConsortiumMaster Course are a strong background in the principles of ComputerScience and a keen interest in the areas of Net-Centric Informatics,Embedded Systems Informatics and Life-Sciences Informatics, aspreviously described.
Applications for students' positions are accepted from candidates, regardless of sex, age, and nationality, who comply with the followingrequirements:
- A first level (at least three years) degree in Computer Science orclosely related disciplines, awarded by an internationally recogniseduniversity-level institution.
- Fluent written and spoken English (certified by either an IELTS score of at least 6.0 or a TOEFL score of at least 550/213).
- A strong background in computer science and mathematics and a keeninterest in the research topics covered by the Master's Programme.
Scholarship
For the academic year 2005/06, 27scholarships are offered for students from countries outside theEuropean Union. The amount of the scholarship is 21.000 EUR per year. These scholarships are funded by the European Commission within theErasmus Mundus programme (http://europa.eu.int/comm/education/programmes/mundus/).Some of these scholarships are reserved to students from specific Asiancountries as specified in the Erasmus Mundus calls. In addition tothese scholarships, alimited number of scholarships will be made available depending on thefinancial sources available at the time of student selection.
