Europe: Erasmus Mundus Masters Course -SUTROFOR - Sustainable Tropical Forestry
The MSc Course in Sustainable Tropical Forestry (SUTROFOR) is a new two-yearworld-class integrated programme aimed at qualifying graduates to deal with thehuge challenges in contemporary tropical forestry. The course starts around 1September 2006 and students should apply for admission as early as possible, andno later than 1 February 2006, using the Application Form available on: www.sutrofor.net.
The SUTROFOR Course is offered by a consortium of five European universities:
(i)The Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Centre for Forest, Landscape andPlanning, Copenhagen, Denmark,
(ii) University of Wales, School of Agricultural andForest Sciences, Bangor, Wales, UK,
(iii) Dresden University of Technology, Instituteof International Forestry and Forest Products, Tharandt, Germany,
(iv) Institute ofForestry, Agricultural and Environmental Engineering, Department of Tropical andRural Forestry, Montpellier, France, and
(v) University of Padova, College ofAgriculture, Padova, Italy.
The Course consists of a first study year at one of three institutions(Bangor, Copenhagen, Dresden) and a specialising second study year with differenttopics offered by each of the five institutions. The students are required to spend thesecond year at another university than the first one. The aim of the first study yearis to provide a thorough and broad introduction to sustainable tropical forestry. Thelearning outcomes are similar for the three first year institutions andallow students to choose among all five specialisation options in the second year.The first year ends with the Joint Summer Module including fieldwork in atropical country.
Specialisation options in the second year are:
(i) Agroforestry systems (Bangor),
(ii) Socio-economics of tropical forestry(Copenhagen),
(iii) Tropical forest management (Dresden),
(iv) Environmentamanagement and policies for tropical forests (Montpellier), and
(v) Ethics in forestryand responsible trade in tropical forest products and services (Padova).
When students have acquired 120 ECTS by studying at two Consortium institutions(at least 60 ECTS at each) they will obtain a SUTROFOR double degree and theDiploma Supplement. All SUTROFOR modular activities can be completed in English,except the second year at Montpellier which is only available in French. Thefollowing degrees are awarded: MSc in Agricultural Development in Copenhagen,MSc in Environmental Forestry and MSc in Agroforestry in Bangor, MSc in TropicalForestry in Dresden, MSc in Tropical and Rural Forestry in Montpellier, and MSc inForestry and Environmental Sciences in Padova.
Consortium fees per year are 4,500 euros for EU/EEA-EFTA students and 8,000 eurosfor third-country students. Around 20-30 Erasmus Mundus scholarships (21,000euros per year per scholarship) are expected to be available for third-countrystudents.
