The German Institute forEconomic Research (DIW Berlin) is one of the leading economic researchinstitutes in Germany. We are an independent, non-for-profit instituteinvolved in applied economic research and policy advice. We co-operateclosely with universities in Berlin and
Brandenburg and in international academic networks.

The Department ofInternational Economics at DIW Berlin is awarding a Junior Research Fellowship for a developmenteconomist interested in working on the project

Conflict, Reconstructionand Development: The Household Perspective

This externally fundedresearch project analyses how violent conflict in
developing countriesaffects poor households and how poor households cope with violentconflict. Household survey data from Mozambique and
Rwanda will be used to address these questions.In addition, policy recommendations forassisting  conflict-affected poor households will be developed. The project ispart of the Households in Conflict Network
(www.hicn.org).

Fellowship Details
The Fellowship lasts forup to three years, starting on 1 October 2005. It entails a stipend ofone thousand Euro per month (non-taxable). The Fellow is expected to bebased at DIW Berlin full-time. It is possible to pursue a doctorate indevelopment economics while working on this
project.

Requirements
You have successfullycompleted a Masters degree in development economics or a relatedsubject, preferably with a strong quantitative background in householdsurvey analysis and micro-econometrics. You have some research experiencein development economics and you are able to
speak and write Englishfluently. Knowledge of German, French or Portuguese would be anadvantage. You work well in teams and, ideally, you have completed some ofyour studies or research abroad.
