Denmark: PhD Scholarship of Semiconductor Lasers in Arrays of Nano-Scale Optical Resonators

In connection with the launching of aresearch project financed by the Danish Research Council for Technologyand Production a PhD scholarship is available. The project is acollaboration between COM-DTU at the Technical University of Denmark(DTU) and Alight Technologies A/S.

The goals of the research project are to develop the scientific toolsand fabrication technologies needed for realizing semiconductor lasersin arrays of nano-scale optical resonators. The small volume of eachresonator and the arrayed structure enables dramatic improvements inoverall laser performance, such as very high modulation rate, highoutput power and improved energy efficiency.

The successful applicant will perform optical design, work with devicefabrication in DTU`s cleanroom facilities and characterize componentsin the optical laboratories of the nanophotonics division at COM-DTU.In addition, Alight Technologies A/S will provide access to theircharacterization setup and consultancy in aspects of design and processdevelopment. The project will entail both fundamental scientificinvestigations as well as device development with an eye on commercialexploitation.Candidates for the position should have a master’s degree inengineering or physics and have a good experimental and/or theoreticalbackground in optoelectronics, optics or solid-state materials physics.

Thescholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, andthe successful candidates will be enrolled as PhD students at theTechnical University of Denmark.

The salary and further terms of employment (3 years) are consistentwith the general terms for PhD students at DTU. Information about thegeneral requirements for enrolment and the general planning of thescholarship studies is included in the general rules of DTU, which maybe obtained by application to the PhD programme office at tel: +45 45251176 or +45 4525 1177.
