The Department of Biotechnology (DBT)of the Ministry of Science and Technology, India and TWAS haveinstituted a fellowship programme for foreign scholars from developingcountries who wish to pursue research towards a Ph.D in Biotechnology.

Conditions

  • The fellowships will be tenable at keybiotechnology research institutions in India for a period of up tothree years at a monthly stipend of INR 8,000 (Indian Rupees) per monthfor the 1st and 2nd year, and INR 9,000 per month for the 3rd year. Themonthly stipend will not be convertible into foreign currency. Inaddition, the fellowship holder will receive HRA (House Rent Allowance)and medical coverage (for minor ailments only). Fellowship holders aretherefore advised to make their own arrangements for more comprehensivemedical insurance. Moreover, the fellowships do not provide any supportfor family members.

  • Acontingency grant of INR 20,000 per fellowship holder per annum will beprovided to the host institute/laboratory in India for study toursundertaken within India in the interest of his/her research work and/orfor the purchase of study material. For a period less than one year,the grant is admissible on a pro rata basis.

  • The cost of international travel (economy class and shortest route) will be met by TWAS.

  • The fellowship holder should not take up other assignments during the period of his/her fellowship.

  • The deadline for receipt of all requests is 31 August of each year.

Eligibility

To be eligible for these fellowships, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Maximum age 30 years.

  • Minimum qualification requirement is a Master's degree in science or engineering or anequivalent degree.

  • Candidates must be nationals of a developing country (other than India) and living there.

  • Fellowshipsfor Ph.D will be awarded only to candidates who are already registeredfor Ph.D in a university in their home country or willing to registerin India.
