CSIR-TWAS Fellowship for Postgraduate Studies
The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)of India, and The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World[formerly Third World Academy of Sciences] (TWAS) have instituted anumber of fellowshipsfor foreign scholars from developing countries who wish to pursueresearchleading towards Ph.D in newly emerging areas in science and technologyforwhich facilities are available in the Laboratories/Institutes of theCSIR.
- The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research is the premiercivil scientific organization of India, which has a network of researchlaboratories covering wide areas of industrial research in biological,physical, chemical, engineering and information sciences.
- The fellowships will be tenable in CSIR Research Laboratories/Institutes in India,at a monthly stipend of INR 8,000 (Indian Rupees) per month for thefirst two years, and extendable for the third year with INR 9,000 permonth. The monthly stipend will not be convertible into foreigncurrency.
- In addition, the research fellows will be entitled to subsidized accommodation.
- There is no provision for any additional grant to cover expenses for spouse and/or children.
- A contingency grant of INR 20,000 per fellow per annum will beprovided to the host institute/laboratory, to facilitate speedyday-to-day working of the fellow. Part of this grant may be utilized bythe fellow for study tours undertaken within India in the interest ofresearch work, purchase of study material, books etc. For less than oneyear, the grant is admissible on a pro rata basis.
- The visitor should not take up any other assignment while on theCSIR-TWAS fellowship in India.
- The minimum qualification requirement is a Master's degree inscience or engineering or equivalent degree. The candidate should be a regularemployee in a developing country and should be holding a research assignment.Fellowship for Ph.D will be awarded only to candidates who are registeredfor Ph.D (in a University either in their home country or in India).
- The medium of instruction for foreign scholars in CSIRLaboratories/Institutes is English.
- The cost of international travel by shortest route will be met byTWAS.
- Applications for CSIR-TWAS Fellowships for Postgraduate Studiesshould be sent — by post only — by the head of the candidate'sinstitution in triplicate copy to CSIR, with one copy to TWAS. The final selection will be made by TWAS and CSIR.
- Applications for Postgraduate Studies should contain the"Registration and No Objection Certificate" (see relevant form below)duly signed by the Vice-Chancellor or Registrar of the University wherethe candidate is registered for Ph.D.
- The deadline for receipt of all requests is 1 June of eachyear.
