Canada: Post-Graduate Research and Training Opportunities in Geography

The Department of Geography at the University of Guelph is seeking to fill a number of funded positions for graduate students. The Department offers programmes leading to MA, MSc and PhD degrees. Opportunities exist for research in the fields of biophysical processes, resource and environmental management, and human geography. The program is distinctive in that it emphasizes interrelationships among biophysical and human systems. A unifying theme is the emphasis on integration and evaluation. Scales of inquiry range from the local to the global, in both developed and developing countries.

Research conducted by graduate students in the various degree programs reflects the core specializations of the Department (resource and environmental management; human geography; and biophysical processes). Within each of these broad areas, there are numerous opportunities for students to pursue their interests in collaboration with faculty, in locations around the world.

The Department guarantees financial support to all students accepted into its graduate programs. Support involves a combination of Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA), Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA), and scholarships. Individual advisors also normally provide additional support for travel and other research expenses over and above the basic amounts provided through GRAs. PhD students are guaranteed support for nine semesters and MA/MSc students for five semesters.

How to Apply
The entry point for the MA/MSc and PhD programs is the fall semester (September). Applications received by January 31 will be considered for the first round of acceptances. Applications received after January 31 may be considered if space is still available. The Department only accepts students for whom an appropriate faculty advisor has been identified prior to admission, and for whom financial support has been secured. Before submitting a formal application, please contact prospective faculty advisors to discuss research opportunities.
