The Institute for European Studies (IES) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel(VUB) calls for applications for two positions of full-time doctoralresearchers for one or two new research projects. Final year students, youngresearchers and other prospective PhD candidates are herewith invited tosubmit project proposals in the following areas as they relate to EuropeanStudies:

  • Migration, Diversity and Development
  • European Foreign and Security Policy
  • Regulatory interplay between the EU and international institutions

Research projects need to be in line with the IES research strategy thatfocuses on the EU as an international actor.

The successful candidates will have an MA degree with good study results.They will be fluent in English and have a thorough knowledge of Europeanpolicy and/or law. They will be selected on the basis of the quality of theproject proposal and on the basis of their CVs.

Candidates will need to send a full CV and a detailed outline describing theresearch project, using the forms that are available from this website(either in MSWord format, or in PDF format). The IES requires that at leastone (co)promoter of the project be from the VUB. The IES may assistsuccessful candidates in finding a suitable (co-)promoter at the VUB.Co-promotership from other Belgian or foreign universities is encouraged.Successful candidates are expected to base themselves in Brussels and workat the IES.

The deadline for applications is: 15 May 2006 (for posts to be taken up asof 1 July).

The successful candidates will receive a research grant for one year(extendable to 4 years). Prolongation of the contract is subject to theagreement of the doctoral committee. Remuneration is at the level of a fulltime research assistant at a Flemish university (i.e. approx. € 1.500,00 netper month) and includes contributions for social security / insurance.Secondary employment is not allowed.
