Australia: Postgraduate Scholarship in Applied Mathematics, Macquarie University
A full-time PhD Macquarie University Research Excellence Scholarships (MQRES) is currently available in the Division of Information and Communication Sciences for a project on rigorous mathematical methods in direct and inverse scattering.
Improvements in modern technologies, such as radar and other imaging devices, that exploit the information carried by electromagnetic waves, depend centrally upon advances in the mathematics of waves to give precise, reliable and effective means of predicting how objects capture and re-radiate wave energy in the scattering environment. Image reconstruction quality is heavily dependent on the underlying algorithm, and even modest improvements can greatly enhance its useability. This project develops new mathematical approaches, based on analytical regularisation and related techniques, to the direct and inverse problems of wave scattering by objects with complex scattering mechanisms.
MQRES scholarships are available to domestic and international students. Applicants should have completed either an Australian undergraduate degree with first class honours (mathematics/applied mathematics/theoretical physics/radio physics or closely related discipline) or equivalent research qualifications, such as a Masters degree with substantial thesis component. Early career professionals interested in returning to higher degree studies are particularly encouraged to apply.
The MQRES stipend is currently $19,616 p.a. tax exempt (2007). Tenure is 3.5 years full-time, subject to satisfactory progress with tuition fees funded for the scholarship tenure. Additional support for project costs and conference travel will also be available.
Further information regarding the project may be obtained by contacting the supervisors: Professor Paul Smith, telephone: +61-2-9850-8944, email: pdsmith@maths.mq.edu.au or Dr Elena Vinogradova, telephone: +61-2-9850-8920, email: evinogra@maths.mq.edu.au.
