Australia: Melbourne Australia International Scholarships at RMIT
The Melbourne Australia International Scholarships were introduced by the Victorian Minister for Education and Training, Lynne Kosky MP, in August 2005.
In 2006 and 2007, the Victorian Government will provide 30 scholarships per annum for international students studying at one of nine participating Victorian universities: Australian Catholic University, Deakin University, La Trobe University, Monash University, RMIT University, Swinburne University of Technology, The University of Melbourne, University of Ballarat and Victoria University.
RMIT University has been allocated four of these scholarships in 2006.
The Melbourne Australia International Scholarship will provide for one semester’s tuition fee up to the value of $AUD14,000. In order for the scholarship to continue through to the second semester of study, the student must achieve a credit average in Semester 1 2006.
Eligibility
In order to qualify for a Melbourne Australia International Scholarship, applicants must:
- Be a citizen of a country other than Australia or New Zealand;
- Have been offered a place at RMIT University to commence studies in Semester 1 2006;
- Be new to Australia, RMIT University or the course;
- Hold a valid student visa for the term of the scholarship;
- Be commencing a coursework program, either undergraduate or postgraduate, that addresses an aspect of Victoria’s skills shortages. In 2006 these areas include:
- Teacher Education – Secondary Teachers in Mathematics, Manual Arts/Technical Studies, General Science (years 7-10), Physical Education and Languages Other Than English (LOTE), specifically French, Indonesian, Italian and Japanese;
- Nursing;
- Pharmacy (in rural areas, hospitals and retail);
- Accounting (internal, compliance and specialist taxation roles);
- Engineering (civil engineer and electrical engineer working with high voltage);
- Medical Studies (occupational therapist, physiotherapist, speech pathologist, podiatrist, radiation therapist, audiologist); and
- Marketing/Public Relations
- Have accepted their offer to commence studies in Semester 1 2006 at RMIT University before 31st January 2006.

Holders of the Melbourne Australia International Scholarship are entitled to hold other scholarships.
Selection Criteria
Scholarships will be awarded by RMIT University to the most outstanding candidates according to past academic performance (high school and/tertiary level).
RMIT University’s decision is final and discussions will not be entered into regarding the awarding of scholarships.
Condition of Award
Recipients of the award will be asked to participate in the promotion of Melbourne/Victoria as a study destination for international students. This could involve, for example, being featured in the Department of Education and Training’s print and electronic publications and involvement in International Education Week activities.
Scholarship Allocation
Scholarships will be allocated to all applicants who have accepted their offer to commence studies at RMIT University in Semester 1 2006, by 5.00pm Eastern Standard Time on 31st January 2006, in one of the above nominated disciplines and levels. RMIT University will allocate the awards based on the information provided. There is no need for a separate application.
