INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS

A very small number of Australian Governmentscholarships under the Endeavour International Postgraduate ResearchScholarship (IPRS) Program and UTS scholarships (IRS) will be available tointernational students to study either a PhD or Master's Degree by Research atUTS in 2006.

CLOSING DATE 31 AUGUST 2005

ELIGIBILITY FOR SCHOLARSHIP

Applications are open to citizens of all overseas countries (excluding New Zealand), who are commencing full-time study in 2006 for a higher degree byresearch.

No age restriction applies for applicants.

The following categories of student are INELIGIBLE for a scholarshipunder the scheme:

  • an overseas student who has already obtained a PhD Degree or equivalent;
  • an overseas student who has already obtained a Master's Degree by Research and who seeks to undertake another Master's Degree by Research;
  • an overseas student who has commenced PhD study in an Australian University prior to 1 January 2006;
  • an overseas student who has commenced Master's by Research study in an Australian University prior to 1 January 2006 and who seeks to undertake another Master's Degree by Research;
  • an overseas student who is currently studying on a scholarship sponsored by AusAID or has recently studied on such a scholarship. All AusAID sponsored students are required to leave Australia at the completion of their AusAID - funded studies and not return to Australia within 2 years.

ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION

PhD Degree
Applicants shall:

  • hold a Bachelor's degree with First or Second Class Honours, Division 1 or a Master's Degree by research of the University of Technology, Sydney; or
  • possess an equivalent qualification.

In addition, applicants will be required toprovide satisfactory evidence of their ability to undertake advanced research appropriateto their PhD program.

Master's Degree by Research
Applicants shall:

  • hold a Bachelor's Degree of the University of Technology, Sydney; or
  • possess an equivalent qualification; or
  • submit such other evidence of general and professional qualifications as will satisfy the Academic Board that the applicant possesses the educational preparation and capacity to pursue graduate studies.

ENGLISH PROFICIENCY

Applicants whose formal education was conducted in a language other thanEnglish are required to provide evidence of their English language proficiency.Evidence of English language proficiency must be provided by the closing datesspecified in this information. Please refer to UTSEnglish language requirements.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and researchcapacity. The applicant's intended area of study must be in an area of researchconcentration of the institution. Please refer to information on UTS's areas ofresearch concentration.

SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS
The scholarships cover only the tuition fees set by UTS and payable for eachyear of the course. The duration of the scholarship is normally limited tothree years for students enrolled in PhD degree programs and two years forstudents enrolled in Master's degree programs by Research. Holders of an IPRSor IRS and their dependants are currently given basic health cover. Thescholarship does not provide financial support for the cost of English languagetesting, bridging programs or English language programs, nor does it provide a livingallowance or allowances covering other expenses.Holders of IPRS or IRS are notpermitted to receive concurrent assistance under Australian Governmentscholarship programs (for example, the Australian Development ScholarshipScheme) or under programs to which the Australian Government makes asubstantial financial contribution (such as the Fulbright Program).

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Application Requirements

  1. International Student Postgraduate Application

    Please mark the top of the front page of this form "IPRS/IRS Applicant". This must also include the following:
    a) Research proposal detailing research objectives, example of your key literature in your area of interest and a broad outline of the sequence and timing of the work that you plan to do;
    b) Prior experience, including work for Bachelor's, Honours or Master theses, consultancies or industry-based research;
    c) If known, contact names of possible supervisors at UTS and whether or not you have been in contact with them; and,
    d) Reports from 2 referees who can vouch for your capacity to carry out research (eg. an academic) on the Academic Referee's Report.

  2. International Postgraduate Research Scholarships Application
  3. Documentary evidence of English proficiency and prior study. Certified copies of English language test results must be provided. Certified copies of degree(s) awarded and full academic transcript(s) showing the subjects studied, the marks obtained and an explanation of the grading system must be provided. Photocopies that are not certified will not be accepted. The International Student Postgraduate Application form lists the organisations authorised by UTS to certify documents. If the documents are not in English, the original language documents and an official translation are required.

Application Fee
No application fee is required.

Closing Date : 31 August 2005 at 5.00pm.

Applications and all supporting documents must be received by 31 August.Incomplete applications will not be considered. It is therefore advisable toapply as early as possible. If you apply early and you are missing anydocuments you will be advised of this by the International Office and will haveuntil 31 August to supply them.

Late applications and applications without the required documentary evidenceat 31 August will not be considered. Faxed applications will not be accepted.Applications must arrive at the address nominated on the application form bythe due time on the due date. Merely posting the application by the due date isnot acceptable.

Successful applicants will be notified by letter by late December 2005.
