Both PhD students will participate in the research programme 'Analysingthe Emergence, Effectiveness and Legitimacy of Public-Private andPrivate-Private Governance Arrangements in Global SustainabilityPolicy', funded by the Netherlands Organisation for ScientificResearch. They will contribute to the overall theoretical framework andthe creation of a Global Sustainability Partnerships Database, and willconduct qualitative empirical analysis of a set of public-private orprivate-private partnerships.

The successful candidates will hold a master's degree in politicalscience, international relations, public administration, environmentalstudies, management studies, or a related discipline. Empiricalknowledge or work experience in environmental policy or globalgovernance is an asset. Excellent skills in English, the workinglanguage within this research programme and within the department, arerequired.

The PhD students will be fully employed by the Institute forEnvironmental Studies for a period of four years, with a monthly grosssalary of 1867 Euro (first year) rising to 2394 Euro (fourth year).They will not have to pay any tuition fee within this PhD programme.They will participate in the graduate programme of the institute andare expected to defend their doctoral thesis, resulting from thisresearch programme, after four years.

INSTITUTIONAL SETTING AND CO-OPERATION

The research team will be part of the Department of EnvironmentalPolicy Analysis of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at theVrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The Institute for Environmental Studies(Instituut voor Milieuvraagstukken, IVM) is the oldest environmentalresearch institute in the Netherlands. Since its creation in 1971, IVMhas built up considerable experience in dealing with the complexitiesof environmental problems. The institute is now a vibrant internationalresearch community of about 110 researchers and supporting staff from avariety of countries and disciplines with a mission to contribute tosustainable development and the preservation of the environment throughacademic research and education. The institute has repeatedly beenevaluated as the best Dutch research group in this field(www.vu.nl/ivm).

IVM's Department of Environmental Policy Analysis (EPA) leads theinstitute's efforts in the field of environmental governance and policyanalysis. It responds to the societal need to alter existing policiesand explore new governance mechanisms that better guarantee atransition to sustainable production and consumption. In line withIVM's multidisciplinary approach, the department strives to bringinsights from different disciplines together for joint research. Theinternational team includes experts from most fields of social science,including anthropology, development studies, management studies, law,philosophy, political science, public administration and psychology.Many projects are international, and several team members are active ininternational research networks, such as the International HumanDimensions Programme, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change,the Millennium Assessment and the Global Environmental Outlookassessment. This research will also contribute to the Global GovernanceProject (GLOGOV.ORG), a joint research programme of four Europeanresearch institutions endorsed by the Institutional Dimensions projectof the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global EnvironmentalChange.
