Overview of Visiting Researcher Program
2006 - 2007

Towardthe promotion of international academic communication and exchange, andin hopes of stimulating the development of research and education bothin Japan and abroad, Kokugakuin University hereby announces a programof support for visiting scholars wishing to pursue research in fieldsrelated to Japanese culture. Applications are invited from foreignscholars and researchers at universities and research institutionsoutside Japan, who wish to undertake research at Kokugakuin under theguidelines of the "Visiting Researcher Program."

 

1. Qualifications

A. Applicant must be scholars or researchers engaged in professional research in field dealing, broadly, with Japanese culture.

B. It is anticipated that successful applicants will be between 30 and about 55 years of age.

C.Applicants should possess sufficient command of the Japanese or Englishlanguages to facilitate everyday communication and life in Japan.Applicants without previous or adequate Japanese language ability maybe required to take courses in Japanese language during their stay, asa means of deepening their understanding of Japanese culture.

D. Applicants may not hold a fellowship from another institution during the period of their Kokugakuin grant.

 

2. Applicable Countries & Regions, and Academic Specialties

Applicantsmay be nationals from any country or region outside Japan (Japanesecitizens may not apply) engaged in any professional academicdiscipline; the selection committee may make special consideration toavoid the over-representation of any single region or discipline. Theselected research topic should be in a field for which Kokugakuinfaculties are available to provide appropriate assistance and advice.Whenever possible, applicants should note on their application the nameof specific Kokugakuin faculty members related to their proposedresearch topic.

 

3. Annual Quota

Nospecific quota of visiting scholars has been established, but it isexpected that a few persons will be selected each year of the program.

 

4. Period of Research

The period of visiting research may be approved for between three and twelve months between April 1, 2006 and March 31, 2007 as indicated on the individual's application and research proposal.

Inprinciple, no change in the period of research will be permitted oncethe applicant begins his or her research at Kokugakuin. Also,applications for research periods shorter than six months will only beconsidered based upon a strict review of the applicant's previousresearch and Kokugakuin's assessment of the applicant's ability toproduce concrete results within the shorter period of time.

 

5. Stipend and Expenses

①Round-trip air travel from the applicant's home country to Japan(economy class), payment to be effected by one of the following methods:

A.Following selection and approval of the applicant's plan of research,Kokugakuin will deposit the amount of the ticket (in the applicant'shome currency), forwarded to the applicant's designated bank account.

B.Alternately, a Prepaid Ticket Advance may be utilized. In this case,Kokugakuin will make arrangement for the purchase the travel ticket,and the applicant will take possession of the ticket at a travel agencyor airline office near his or her home.

② Visitingresearchers will each be paid a monthly living stipend of \150,000during the period of their stay in Japan (fractions of full months willbe paid on a per diem basis, (\5,000 per day).

③ Aone-time research stipend (maximum \100,000) will be paid for use inpurchasing books and materials, and for research-related travel whilein Japan.

④ Visiting researchers will be providedwith a private guest room in Kokugakuin International Exchange Centerfor the duration of their stay in Tokyo (the school will pay withheating and light expenses, together with the basic telephone servicecharge; telephone calls are billed individually, and must be paid forby the user).

⑤ The premium for National HealthInsurance of Japan (NHI) will be paid by Kokugakuin. 80 % of themedical expense billed to the researchers will be reimbursed byKokugakuin if the treatment was covered by NHI.

 

6. Application Procedures

Applicantsmust submit the following documents so as to assure their arrival atthe International Exchange Committee by September 30, 2005:

① Application form

② Proposed plan of research

③ Recommendation from the director of the institution where currently employed

④Curriculum vitae (educational and employment history, membership in scholarly organizations, professional publications, etc.)

⑤ Health certificate (signed by the applicant's doctor)

⑥ Three photographs of the applicant

 

7. Notification of Selection

Successfulapplicants will be notified of their selection by the end ofNovember,2005, and will be sent an official letter of invitation fromthe president of Kokugakuin University. If requested, an officialletter of notification will also be sent to the director of theinstitution where the applicant is employed.

 

8. Research Report

A.Before returning to their home countries, visiting researchers will berequired to present the results of their research in the form of anoral presentation and/or written research paper.

B.Visiting researchers must submit a notification of results of researchto the president of Kokugakuin University through the head of thedepartment with which they are affiliated during the course of research.

C.As part of their research activities at Kokugakuin, visitingresearchers may be called upon to teach occasional classes or deliveroccasional guest lectures regarding their specialty.
