OPEN POSITION IN SCIENTIFIC DATA AND WORKFLOW MANAGEMENT

The Computer Science Department at the University of California atDavis (http://www.cs.ucdavis.edu) in collaboration with the LawrenceBerkeley National Laboratory (http://www.lbl.gov/) is looking for aPostdoctoral Researcher to conduct research and development on

"Data Management on the Fusion Computational Pipeline"

The project is part of a multi-institutional Scientific Data ManagementCenter supported by the Department of Energy, Office of Science. Thesuccessful candidate will work in a team with researchers from theScientific Data Management Center (http://sdm.lbl.gov/sdmcenter/), aswell as application scientists (physicists) on large-scaledata-intensive and computationally intensive scientific workflows, andthe associated data management problems.

Applicants should have completed their PhD in Computer Science orshould be very near completion (the position is open until filled;planned start date is October 2005), and have a experience orbackground in one or more of the following:
- foundations of databases (query languages, query processing, optimization)
- parallel and distributed computing
- data/computational Grid systems and middleware
- solid programming experience (e.g. C++, Java, Perl, Python)
- concepts of workflow languages and systems

Moreover, an interest to interact with scientists from the applicationdomain (fusion simulation and experiments) to understand the technologythey use, and to apply and adapt CS techniques to these domain isrequired to be successful in our multi-disciplinary team of CSresearchers, domain scientists, and IT practitioners.

The successful candidate will join the Department of Computer Scienceat UC Davis, but will also work very closely with colleagues from theScientific Data Management Center and with application scientists atDOE labs.
