POST DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS IN ADVANCED LIGHT ALLOY RESEARCH

TheUniversity of Manchester is seeking high quality candidates forResearch Associate and Research Fellowships positions within the Schoolof Materials . These positions have arisen as a result of the lightalloys group being successful in obtaining a £5.9M EPSRC PortfolioPartnership award for research in “Light Alloys for EnvironmentallySustainable Transportâ€ÂÂ.
The Portfolio Partnership willinvolve a coordinated programme that targets key enabling technologies,aimed at increasing the industrial application of light alloys,improving their efficiency and reducing their environmental impact. Theproject involves close collaboration with the aerospace and automotiveindustrial sectors.
Candidates will work within a teamenvironment involving seven academic members of staff and must have aPhD, and/or relevant equivalent experience of one or more of thefollowing research themes;
Surface engineering, corrosionand environmental protection (including functionalised surfaces, thefundamentals of film growth, and environmentally friendly replacementand novel conversion treatments), Joining (friction stir welding,process and microstructure modelling), advanced metal forming(including superplastic and creep forming), deformationmicrostructures, texture and recrystallisation, severe deformation andnano-grained materials, (including basic research in 3D deformationstructures and modelling).
As well as having an excellentresearch track record, applicants must have good communication, timemanagement and team working skills. Candidates will be considered atboth the Research Associate and Research Fellowship level. ResearchFellows will be expected to demonstrate an aptitude for independentresearch, contribute to the management of a research theme, thetraining of PhD students, and undertake a portfolio of basic scienceand applied research projects.
The post is available from November 2005 until April 2006.
Salary:
In the range £19,460 - £29,128 p.a. At Research Associate level £27,116 - £40,091 p.a. at Fellowship level.
