The Netherland: Postdoc in Plant Evolutionary Geneticist

The Experimental Plant Systematics group studies the distribution and origin of genetic variation in various plant genera, mostly relatives of the model species Arabidopsis thaliana. One of the main research questions is how complex adaptations evolve within species, and what role isolation and hybridization play in this process. These questions are addressed by a variety of experimental methods, for example the analysis of breeding systems, studies of species hybrids and introgression, gene expression, comparative studies, and studies of plant responses under varying conditions. The successful candidate will study genetic variation and gene expression in relatives of Arabidopsis thaliana (mainly Draba and Rorippa species), focusing on the reaction of plants to abiotic stress factors (temperature, flooding). Variation in candidate genes as well as their expression will be studied, in close collaboration with the work in ongoing projects by PhD students. As previous expertise in various molecular techniques (genetic markers, gene expression, sequencing) and in genetic data analyses is essential, we are seeking an experienced post-doc with extensive lab experience.

Tasks
The post-doc will use a variety of methods, including candidate gene expression, micro-arrays, genetic (sequence) variation in key genes involved in plant responses, differential displays of plants subjected to stress, in situ hybridisation.

Requirements
Candidates must possess a PhD in Biology, with ecology, evolutionary biology and molecular biology as the main ingredients of their training. They must also have extensive experience with the application of molecular genetic methods in the lab.

More information
Further information can be obtained from Prof. P.H. van Tienderen, phone +31 20-525 7821, e-mail tienderen@science.uva.nl.

Appointment
The appointment will be for 2.5 years. The salary will be in accordance with the University regulations for academic personnel. It will range from € 2,191 to € 2,850 per month, before tax, depending on previous experience.

Job application
Applications must include a detailed curriculum vitae and a cover letter. They should be sent in an envelope marked ‘strictly confidential’ and ‘vacancy number 05-1041’ in the upper left-hand corner before 2 September 2005 to: Universiteit van Amsterdam, Faculty of Science – dept. PZ, attn: P. Scholts, Kruislaan 404, 1098 SM Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Applications may also be e-mailed to: ibed@science.uva.nl.
