Sweden: Postdoctoral Positions at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm


The Board of Research at Karolinska Institutet hereby announces funding for 10 postdoc positions where co-funding is required from the departments.

Eligible to apply for postdoctoral funding are applicants who:

  • Will perform the postdoctoral studies at a department distinct from that where the PhD was awarded and substantially change their line of research.
  • Will defend their thesis at the latest February 1st 2007.
  • Have commenced postdoctoral studies at the host laboratory no earlier than May 1st 2006.
  • Have defended their thesis no earlier than November 1st 2003. Exceptions up to two years can be made on account of parental leave, illness, military service and internship (allmäntjänstgöring). Please include verification with the application.

Applicants need for a valid application

  • To contact the principal investigator of the receiving group at Karolinska Institutet with whom they want to perform their postdoctoral training.
  • Commitment from the Head of Department to co-fund granted projects as confirmed by signature on the application form.

For information about research groups at the departments please see ki.se. Positions are open to qualified candidates in all fields. Candidates can only submit applications for one project at one host laboratory at each round of selection.

The selection of the candidates will be based on the competence of the applicant, the scientific value and novelty of their research plan, and the scientific environment of the receiving laboratory. Applicants offered the joint funding hereby announced will be offered to take part in an exclusive training and support program arranged by the Career and Recruitment Unit at Karolinska Institutet.

You are welcome to apply for a 24 month period. The postdoctoral studies co-funded from Karolinska Institutet must start between March 1st 2007 and September 30th 2007. Applicants must hold a PhD degree before the start of the postdoctoral period.

The application should include the following documents:

  1. A signed application form, to be downloaded at ki.se/research. Please note that the application is not valid without the signature of the chairman (prefekt) of the department where the postdoctoral training will be performed.
  2. A full CV including: dissertation date and title of thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, present position, academic awards and engagements in committees of trust.
  3. A complete list of publications.
  4. A synopsis of current work (1 page)
  5. A synopsis of proposed activity at the receiving research group written by the applicant (max 5 pages, including references and figures, 12 p font size, 1.5 line space). The synopsis should be arranged under the following headings: a) Specific aims: an account of the objective(s) of the proposed research project. b) Survey of the field: a summary of research and previous findings in the field, with key references. c) Project description: a summary plan for the project, including method and execution of the project. d) Significance: a brief account of the importance of the project to the research field concerned and relevance for medical/clinical needs.
  6. A letter of acceptance from the research leader from the receiving group.
  7. A short CV of the research leader of the receiving group (max 1 page 12 p font size, 1.5 line space) and selected publications (max 1 page 12 p font size, 1.5 line space). The CV should include: dissertation date, previous academic positions, academic title, present position, academic awards and engagements in committees of trust.

If the PhD thesis is to be defended after last application date (November 1st 2006), enclose a formal document from the dissertation-committee stating the date of dissertation. For a valid application, the PhD thesis must be defended no later than February 1st 2007. If the PhD thesis was defended before November 1st 2003; include verification of parental leave, illness, military service and/or internship (allmäntjänstgöring).

Applications, marked Ref no 4540/2006-226 in one original and 11 copies (sorted into 12 bundles, each containing a complete set of application), should have arrived at Registrar, Karolinska Institutet SE-17177 Stockholm, Sweden no later than November 1st 2006 at 17.00 hrs.
