Postdoctoral Research Fellowship: Diabetes and Cardiovascular Diseases, Stellenbosch University, South Africa
A postdoctoral fellowship is available at the Department of Physiological Sciences at Stellenbosch University for a motivated candidate who is interested in the pathogenesis of Type 2 diabetes and its link to cardiovascular diseases. The successful candidate will be working in Professor Faadiel Essop’s laboratory and will be involved in research programs focusing on delineation of molecular mechanisms driving the onset of insulin resistance/Type 2 diabetes and also assess its effects on mitochondrial and heart function. Applicants who have recently completed a PhD degree in the fields of Physiology, Biochemistry or related disciplines can apply for this Postdoctoral Fellowship. Individuals who have submitted their PhD degrees for December 2008 graduation are also welcome to apply. Experience in one or more of the following research methodologies, i.e. cell culture, molecular techniques, mitochondrial functional studies, heart perfusions is a recommendation.
The tax-free Fellowship is tenable for one year, but should be extended for a second year depending on the applicant’s progress. The proposed starting date for the fellowship is January 2008, but this is negotiable. In addition, running expenses are available for the duration of the project.
